Job summary

New Zealand Government seeks a Kaitakawaenga at Mt Eden to support Māori tamariki and whānau, addressing barriers to learning support for tamariki with special educational needs. The role works with iwi, hapū, runanga and education colleagues in a dynamic public service environment.

You will bring Te Reo Māori and tikanga, strong relationship-building, and a child-and-family-centred approach across diverse settings.

Qualifications

  • Specialist knowledge of theory, research and practice related to the auraki education system and Māori Education from kohanga reo, kura kaupapa, wharekura and whare wananga.
  • Experience in networking with iwi, hapu, runanga, whānau.
  • Experience in facilitating hui, powhiri, tikanga Māori.
  • Experience in a complex organisation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in Māori settings including the auraki education system and Māori education from kohanga reo, kura kaupapa, wharekura and whare wananga.
  • Ability to work effectively with children and young people and their families/whanau, using a child and family centred approach, across a diverse range of settings.
  • A relevant diploma qualification (minimum two years study) or higher.
  • Te Reo me ona tikanga, ability to build trusting relationships, communication and lived experience.
  • At least three years helping to build others capability in te reo Māori or three years working in the community in Māori development.
  • Full clean Driver's Licence.
  • The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

  • The Kaitakawaenga works proactively with Māori tamariki, mokopuna and their whānau, hapū and iwi, educators and Learning Support colleagues to identify and eliminate barriers to access to learning support services for Māori students with special educational and developmental needs.

We have a permanent full time Kaitakawaenga role at our Maungawhau | Mt Eden office. The Kaitakawaenga works proactively with Māori tamariki, mokopuna and their whānau, hapū and iwi, educators and Learning Support colleagues to identify and eliminate barriers to access to learning support services for Māori students with special educational and developmental needs.

About our group and team | Mātau rōpū ake

Te Mahau collectively provide leadership and integrated services to the education sector. Our core role is to deliver professional services and provide advice to schools, kura, and early learning services, to help them to achieve better outcomes for tamariki and ākonga. This includes advice and guidance to the sector for the implementation of Government's priorities, working directly with schools, kura and early learning services and connecting in with other government agencies, iwi and community groups.
