Job description

NZ Thoroughbred Racing Inc – Cambridge, North Island

NZTR is the governing body of the thoroughbred racing industry in New Zealand. We represent the interests of industry stakeholders, develop and promote racing, and ensure the economic wellbeing of those who derive their livelihoods from racing. Our mission is simple: to do what's best for New Zealand thoroughbred racing.

The Role

We are seeking a Junior Developer to join our Digital team based in Cambridge, Waikato, on a fixed-term basis to provide parental leave cover. This role will begin in November and be for roughly 7 months.

You will contribute to the development and support of software solutions that help NZTR continue its transformation into a more digital organisation.

This is a hands-on role across the software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, design, development, testing, deployment and ongoing support. A key focus will be supporting operational systems, assisting with testing in real racing environments, investigating issues identified during testing or operational use, and implementing software changes in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with the IT team, stakeholders and third-party providers to design, develop, implement and support software solutions.

Participate in requirements gathering, design, development, testing and deployment.

Write clean, secure and maintainable code in line with best practice and coding standards.

Troubleshoot and debug issues in existing software solutions and implement effective fixes.

Support operational systems, including testing in real racing environments.

Build knowledge of NZTR business processes, systems, websites and the Racing Management System.

Maintain knowledge of secure development standards and support NZTR's security posture.

About You

You're a practical problem solver who enjoys learning, collaborating and turning ideas into reliable solutions. You can work across competing priorities, communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical people, and stay calm when troubleshooting issues in a live operational environment.

You're proactive, adaptable and comfortable asking questions when needed. You take pride in producing secure, maintainable work and enjoy being part of a close-knit team where people share knowledge and support one another.

If you're looking for a role where you can broaden your technical skills, gain hands-on experience and contribute to systems that support New Zealand's thoroughbred racing industry, we'd love to hear from you.

What You'll Bring

A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.

A solid understanding of object-oriented programming concepts and principles.

Proficiency in at least one commonly used programming language, preferably C# or similar.

Knowledge of database management systems such as SQL.

Familiarity with source control, preferably Git.

An understanding of software testing, debugging and troubleshooting techniques.

Strong problem-solving, analytical, communication and collaboration skills.

A proactive attitude and willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and tools.

Familiarity with .NET APIs, web applications and application integrations would be advantageous.

Experience or knowledge of racing or the thoroughbred industry would be beneficial.

Willingness to travel when required.

About the Team

You'll be part of a small and collaborative Digital team that enjoys sharing ideas, solving problems and finding practical ways to support the industry. You'll work closely with NZTR colleagues, third-party providers and industry partners, with plenty of opportunity to learn from others and build your technical capability.

The work can be fast-paced, and priorities may shift to meet operational needs, but you'll be surrounded by people who are committed to delivering reliable solutions and supporting one another. We value curiosity, clear communication and a willingness to get involved.

Applicants with the right to work in NZ will only be considered

Please note: We will be reviewing and interviewing candidates on a rolling basis as applications are received. We strongly encourage you to submit your application as early as possible, as positions may be filled before the closing date.
