Company Overview
South and North Ltd is a New Zealand-based digital media and technology company that owns and operates Infomate (infomate.co.nz) — a community-focused online platform that connects Kiwis with local news, events, marketplace listings, property, motoring, and services across New Zealand.
Delivered through both a web platform and a dedicated iOS mobile application, Infomate is organised around three core areas — social support, business, and lifestyle — and brings together curated editorial content and user-generated content in a single, locality-aware product. Users can browse community listings, search for local services, discover events, engage with the Locally and Live sections, and participate through Matepoints, our engagement and loyalty programme. The platform also operates a paid advertising business, providing local businesses with a targeted channel to reach their community.
Behind the platform is an in-house engineering team that continuously ships new features across web and mobile, maintains a growing content and user database, and works closely with editorial, sales, and operations colleagues to keep the product fast, reliable, and relevant to New Zealand users. As our user base and commercial partners continue to grow, we are investing further in our engineering capability and are seeking an experienced and technically strong Software Developer to join our Auckland office.
Job Summary
South and North Ltd is seeking an experienced Software Developer to play a hands‑on role in the ongoing development and enhancement of the Infomate web platform and the Infomate iOS mobile application. The role covers the full software development lifecycle — from investigating business and user needs, through design, coding, and testing, to release, documentation, and post‑release support — across the platform's community, service, marketplace, motor, and property modules.
The successful candidate will work closely with product, editorial, sales, and operations colleagues to translate business and user requirements into working software features, improve the performance and stability of existing modules, and help shape the platform's technical direction as its user base and advertising business continue to scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate, consult on, and analyse the software and system requirements of the Infomate platform across its community, service, marketplace, motor, and property modules, working with product owners, editorial staff, and sales colleagues to translate business and user requirements into clear technical specifications.
- Review the existing Infomate web platform and iOS mobile application to identify technical limitations, performance bottlenecks, and deficiencies in existing workflows, processes, and development procedures, and recommend practical improvements.
- Develop, test, debug, and maintain application code in accordance with the company's established testing protocols, coding standards, and release procedures, including diagnosing and correcting defects identified through internal QA, monitoring, and user feedback.
- Build and maintain source code for new and existing features of the Infomate web platform and mobile application in accordance with system requirements, solution designs, and detailed technical specifications, while maintaining code quality, reliability, and performance.
- Prepare, update, and maintain technical documentation, system documentation, end‑user technical guidance, and internal operating procedures for the software modules and features under the developer's responsibility.
- Provide technical input and recommendations to management on proposed software initiatives, including effort assessments, development cost estimates, software upgrades, third‑party services, and whether solutions should be developed internally or acquired externally.
- Collaborate with UX designers, back‑end engineers, editorial, and advertising operations teams to develop and deliver end‑to‑end software features across the Infomate web and mobile platforms, including functionality supporting user‑generated content, curated content, local services, marketplace listings, and paid advertising placements.
- Participate in solution design discussions, code reviews, testing, and release planning, and contribute to the ongoing improvement of development standards, technical practices, and knowledge sharing within the engineering team.
