Job summary

Matamata-Piako District Council is seeking a Kai-whakahaere ā-Tūhono to support the Pou Tūhono – Iwi Relationship Manager, ensuring obligations are met through proactive engagement and culturally appropriate processes. The role preserves and strengthens relationships with communities across the district.

Qualifications

• Proficient in Te Reo Māori with a sound understanding of tikanga Māori.
• A tertiary qualification in a relevant field or significant practical experience in Māori engagement.
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with iwi/Māori.
• Experience providing cultural advice and contributing to policy development.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey Māori perspectives to both Māori and non-Māori audiences.
• Knowledge of the Waikato region, including the iwi and hapū constructs, is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain partnerships with iwi/Māori to strengthen relationships aligned with Council strategy.
• Advise on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga Māori, Te Reo Māori, and mātauranga Māori for informed decisions.
• Contribute to policy, planning, and strategy with meaningful Māori engagement.
• Support staff capability development in Te Ao Māori.
• Facilitate pōwhiri/mihi whakatau and other tikanga at events.
• Enhance community engagement and advocate Māori perspectives in council activities.
