Job summary

MBIE is seeking a data and research analyst or senior data and research analyst in Wellington Central for a fixed-term role to July 2027. You will develop tools and reports that tell MBIE’s science investment story and support monitoring of investments, while presenting data in accessible forms for diverse audiences.

You will bring strong quantitative and qualitative skills, experience with Excel/SQL/Power BI, and the ability to build stakeholder relationships and coach junior staff where

Qualifications

• Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills.
• Experience using Microsoft Excel, SQL, Power BI and other tools to manage, summarise, interpret, and present data.
• Excellent written and oral communications skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• A tertiary qualification is preferred in a relevant discipline (e.g. statistics, science, social sciences), and/or extensive comparable experience in operational policy.

Responsibilities

• Develop tools, reports and analysis that tell MBIE’s science investment story and support effective management of investment and monitoring processes.
• Be bright and curious—present credible, evidenced-based interpretation of underpinning information.
• Champion data integrity and using quantitative information to steer operational practice and monitoring of performance.
• Build credible, collaborative relationships with stakeholders across and beyond MBIE, understanding their needs and providing responsive analytical support.
• Turn complex analysis into clear, compelling stories tailored to different audiences.
