Job summary

McConnell Dowell – Creative Construction in Dunedin is seeking a Fitter/Welder to join our hands-on team delivering critical infrastructure projects.

Based in Dunedin, you will perform mechanical fitting, fabrication and welding across projects, reading drawings and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to high quality standards. You will contribute to project delivery with a proactive safety mindset.

Qualifications

  • Trade qualification in Mechanical Eng, Fitting and Turning, Welding or Fabrication.
  • Experience as a Fitter/Welder in construction or heavy industry.
  • Strong welding, fabrication and mechanical fitting experience.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and technical docs.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, quality requirements.
  • Team player with proactive safety mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform fitting, fabrication and welding to project specs.
  • Install, maintain, repair and modify mechanical equipment.
  • Read and interpret drawings, weld procedures, and docs.
  • Ensure welding and fabrication meet quality standards.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, engineers and trades.
  • Inspect tools, plant and equipment for safe operation.
  • Identify defects and report maintenance needs.
  • Participate in pre-starts and toolbox talks.
  • Support health, safety, environmental and quality excellence.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

About the Role

Reporting to the Mechanical Foreperson, the Fitter / Welder is responsible for carrying out mechanical fitting, fabrication, and welding activities across McConnell Dowell's projects in Dunedin.

This is a hands‑on role working as part of a high‑performing team delivering critical infrastructure projects. You will be involved in the installation, maintenance, repair, and fabrication of mechanical components and systems while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. The ideal candidate will be based in Dunedin.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform fitting, fabrication, and welding activities in accordance with project specifications and drawings.
  • Carry out installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of mechanical equipment and infrastructure.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, weld procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure all welding and fabrication work meets quality requirements and relevant standards.
  • Support project delivery by working collaboratively with supervisors, engineers, and other trades.
  • Inspect and maintain tools, plant, and equipment to ensure safe operation.
  • Identify and report defects, maintenance requirements, and potential risks.
  • Participate in pre‑starts, toolbox talks, and safety initiatives.
  • Promote and uphold McConnell Dowell's commitment to health, safety, environmental, and quality excellence.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across project delivery.
About You
  • Trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Fitting and Turning, Welding, Fabrication, or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as a Fitter/Welder within construction, infrastructure, heavy industrial, or maintenance environments.
  • Strong experience in welding, fabrication, and mechanical fitting activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Experience working with structural steel, pipework, pumps, valves, or mechanical plant is advantageous.
  • Sound knowledge of Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality requirements.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • A proactive attitude with a strong commitment to quality workmanship and safety.
