Job summary

KiwiRail is seeking a Financial Accountant (Fixed-Term) in Wellington to support the financial accounting team with asset-related tasks, including asset sub-ledgers, capitalization, disposals, impairments, journals, reconciliations, and month-end/year-end reporting.

You will collaborate with stakeholders to provide timely financial advice, support decision-making, and ensure accuracy of financial processes.

Qualifications

• Three to five years’ experience in a financial accounting role.
• Understanding of NZ IFRS and/or PBE IPSAS.
• Commerce degree and CA (or equivalent) qualification, or working towards qualification.
• Understanding of asset accounting, including fixed assets and capital projects.
• Experience in a large or complex organisation is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Complete asset accounting tasks: maintain asset sub-ledgers, capitalization of work in progress, disposals, impairments, journals, reconciliations.
• Support month-end and year-end reporting with accurate financial data.
• Provide timely financial advice and support business decisions across KiwiRail.
• Act as backup for team members and assist with external audits.

As a Financial Accountant, you’ll be primarily responsible for completing asset accounting related tasks contributing to a broad range of asset activities including maintaining asset sub-ledgers, capitalisation of work in progress, disposals, impairments, journals, reconciliations and month-end and year-end reporting. With a customer-focused approach, you will work with stakeholders across KiwiRail providing timely financial advice, support business decision-making, and help ensure the integrity and accuracy of key financial processes.

You’ll also provide essential back-up support for team members as required, support external audit requirements, and contribute to the delivery of high-quality financial reporting in a complex operating environment.

• Three to five years’ experience in a financial accounting role


• You have a good understanding of financial processes, reporting requirements and NZ IFRS and/or PBE IPSAS


• A relevant commerce degree and CA (or equivalent) qualification, or working towards qualification


• An understanding of, or a strong interest in, asset accounting, including fixed assets, capital projects and associated accounting treatments


• Experience within a large or complex organisation would be advantageous
