Job summary

Hamilton City Council is seeking a field-based water sampling technician to support the IAWAI project in the Waikato region. You will start at the Pukete laboratory, prepare equipment, calibrate devices, and travel daily to multiple collection sites to collect wastewater, surface water, groundwater and drinking water samples for testing.

The role requires attention to procedure, accurate reporting, and the ability to plan efficient routes across the Waikato region.

Qualifications

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and/or work experience.
  • Must have a full and clean NZ Drivers Licence.
  • Prior experience following process and procedure in a work environment.
  • A working knowledge of the Waikato region’s geography, and the ability to develop efficient but flexible travel routes.
  • Good understanding of laboratory systems and processes.
  • Experience in calibration and maintenance of sampling equipment.
  • Good understanding of environmental sampling.
  • An understanding of ISO certified Quality Management Systems.

Responsibilities

  • Start your day at our Pukete laboratory, preparing equipment and performing calibrations.
  • Drive between collection sites within the greater Waikato region.
  • Collect water samples (wastewater, surface water, groundwater, drinking water) and undertake field testing.
  • Follow procedures and maintain clear, detailed written reports.
  • Work Monday to Friday 7:00am–3:30pm, with potential weekends and public holidays.

Job description

Hamilton City and Waikato District Councils have formed a publicly owned, Council-controlled Organisation (CCO) to deliver water services across Hamilton city and Waikato district. The company is calledIAWAI - Flowing Watersand will take over the provision of water services from 1 July 2026. This transition will occur in stages such as the current Watercare contract for Waikato District Council transferring to the CCO on 1 July 2026.

Job Description

You will start your day at our Pukete laboratory, preparing equipment and performing calibrations. You’ll then be working independently driving between collection sites within the greater Waikato region. At these collection sites you will follow procedure to collect water (wastewater, surface/source water, ground water, drinking water) samples and undertake field testing. If you tick the boxes below, then this could well be the role for you.

  • Comfortable driving long distances daily – we cover from Mokau to Waihi!
  • Don’t mind working outdoors, funky smells and getting your hands dirty sometimes.
  • Have attention to detail to follow written methods and keep clear and detailed written reports.
  • Can plan ahead to anticipate needs and adapt to changes in priorities and workload.
  • Are able and willing to work and communicate effectively with a diverse range of collaborators and colleagues.
  • Able to work Monday to Friday from 7.00am – 3.30pm and be open to working weekends and public holidays sometimes.
