Job summary

Enviroworks Ltd in Whangārei seeks an Excavator Operator to safely and efficiently operate excavators and heavy machinery across civil, drainage and underground utility projects. This hands-on role supports the wider civil crew to complete projects safely, accurately and on time.

You will read plans and drawings, perform daily pre-start checks, assist with installation and maintenance of underground infrastructure, and keep equipment in a clean, safe and ready-to-work condition for the crew.

Qualifications

• Proven experience operating excavators in a civil construction environment.
• Experience with drainage, sewer, stormwater or underground utility work is advantageous.
• Ability to read and interpret plans, drawings and site instructions.

Responsibilities

• Safely and efficiently operate excavators and heavy machinery.
• Carry out excavation, trenching, backfilling, loading and general civil works.
• Undertake drainage and underground service excavations to required levels and specifications.
• Work around underground services and follow plans, drawings and site instructions.
• Assist with installation and maintenance of sewer, stormwater and other underground infrastructure.
• Collaborate with drainlayers, drill crews, labourers and site supervisors.
• Perform daily pre-start checks and identify mechanical or safety issues.
• Maintain machinery in a clean, safe and operational condition.

As an Excavator Operator, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of excavators and other construction machinery while supporting the wider civil crew to complete projects safely, accurately and on time. This is a hands‑on role working across a range of civil, drainage, underground utility and construction projects.

Key responsibilities

• Safely and efficiently operate excavators and other heavy machinery as required.
• Carry out excavation, trenching, backfilling, loading and general civil works.
• Undertake drainage and underground service excavations to the required levels and specifications.
• Work accurately around existing underground services and infrastructure.
• Follow plans, drawings, levels and site instructions.
• Assist with the installation and maintenance of sewer, stormwater and other underground infrastructure as required.
• Work closely with drainlayers, drill crews, labourers and site supervisors.
• Carry out daily pre-start checks and identify any mechanical or safety issues.
• Maintain machinery in a clean, safe and operational condition.
• Carry out basic maintenance, cleaning, lubrication and refuelling as required.

About you

• Proven experience operating excavators in a civil construction environment.
• Experience with drainage, sewer, stormwater or underground utility work is highly advantageous.
• Experience working around underground services.
• The ability to excavate accurately to required levels and grades.
• A good understanding of excavation and trenching hazards.
• Strong practical and mechanical awareness.
• The ability to read and understand plans, drawings and site instructions.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a crew.
• A strong commitment to health and safety.
