Massey University – Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa on its Manawatu campus in Palmerston North seeks an Equine Technician to join the Veterinary Teaching Hospital team. This full-time permanent role provides clinical nursing, supports veterinarians, and helps run a teaching hospital for students.

The successful candidate will have a Diploma of Veterinary Nursing or higher, solid experience with horses, and strong communication skills. The role includes night and weekend shifts to support inpatient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care and monitor equine patients.

  • Administer medications and collect diagnostic samples.
  • Maintain clinical areas, equipment, supplies, and pharmacy stock.
  • Support clients with appointments, enquiries, and payments.
  • Mentor veterinary students during rotations.
  • Contribute to feeding, husbandry, and after-hours care.

Job description

The School of Veterinary Science is seeking to employ an Equine Technician to join our team at Massey University's Manawatu campus in Palmerston North. This position is a full-time, permanent opportunity.

We are seeking a passionate and capable Equine Veterinary Nurse to join our Veterinary Teaching Hospital team. This varied and hands-on role involves providing high-quality nursing care to equine patients, supporting veterinarians with diagnostic and surgical procedures, and contributing to the smooth day-to-day operation of the clinic.

Working within a teaching environment, you will also play an important role in supporting veterinary students during their clinical rotations, while helping to deliver exceptional patient care and client service. This position includes participation in scheduled night and weekend shifts to support inpatient care outside normal business hours.

  • Provide nursing care and monitor equine patients.
  • Assist with imaging, surgery, anaesthesia, and diagnostics.
  • Safely handle and restrain horses for procedures and transport.
  • Administer medications and collect diagnostic samples.
  • Maintain clinical areas, equipment, supplies, and pharmacy stock.
  • Support clients with appointments, enquiries, and payments.
  • Assist and mentor veterinary students during clinical rotations.
  • Contribute to feeding, husbandry, and after-hours patient care.
Mou | About you
  • A Diploma of Veterinary Nursing or higher (or equivalent).
  • Confidence and experience in handling and caring for horses.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a professional, proactive and team-orientated approach.
  • Previous experience in veterinary nursing and/or teaching would be advantageous.
