Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assist with environmental inspections, audits and monitoring across the Port.
  • Support environmental incident investigations and documentation.
  • Collect, manage, analyse and report environmental data.
  • Support stormwater, air quality and ecological monitoring programmes.
  • Contribute to environmental projects and improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with training material and monitor compliance with standards.

Port of Tauranga is seeking an enthusiastic Environmental Technician Cadet to join our Property Team for a fixed term of 9 months. The role is 8 hours per week initially with potential for increased hours during peak workload. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or someone in the final stages of tertiary study to gain hands-on experience across environmental monitoring, compliance, data analysis, incident investigations, and sustainability initiatives in a complex industrial setting.

About the role

Reporting to the Environmental Manager, you will play an important role in supporting the Port's environmental compliance and performance programmes. You will work alongside experienced environmental professionals and gain exposure to a broad range of environmental activities across the Port's operations.

Key responsibilities

Undertaking environmental inspections, audits and monitoring activities across the Port.

Assisting with environmental incident investigations and documentation.

Collecting, managing, analysing and reporting environmental data.

Supporting stormwater, air quality and ecological monitoring programmes.

Identifying environmental risks, non-compliant activities and opportunities for improvement.

Assisting with environmental training and induction material.

Monitoring Port user activities to ensure compliance with environmental standards and procedures.

Supporting ecological monitoring and pest management activities where required.

Assisting with the management and maintenance of environmental monitoring equipment and supplies.

Contributing to environmental projects that improve the Port's environmental performance and outcomes.

About you

A completed or near-completed qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or a related discipline.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Confidence working with data and sound computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Excel.

Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

The ability to work collaboratively and build positive working relationships.

A practical approach and willingness to undertake field-based work in a port environment.

An interest in environmental monitoring, compliance and environmental improvement initiatives.

A full New Zealand Driver Licence (manual licence preferred but not essential).

Previous environmental work experience is advantageous but not required.
