Job summary

Amazon Data Services New Zealand Limited in Auckland is seeking a Data Centre Engineering Operations Technician to support day-to-day facility operations and the critical infrastructure that keeps data centers running. You will work with a diverse team to maintain electrical, cooling and monitoring systems while ensuring safety and high standards.

The role requires hands-on experience in data centers, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to respond to incidents.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of work in a data center or other critical environment.
  • Experience with vendor management and coordinating subcontractors.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related field; Journeyman license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage site operations with collocation vendors and sub-contractors to high AWS standards.
  • Oversee maintenance of critical systems (switch gear, generators, UPS, chillers, CRAC, etc.).
  • Establish performance benchmarks and prepare reports on facility operations and maintenance.
  • Create and implement projects to increase capacity, efficiency, and reliability.

This is a unique opportunity to join AWS as a Data Centre Engineering Operations Technician (EOT) in Auckland. You will support our Data Centre facilities and the critical equipment that keeps us running. This includes LV electrical lineups, diesel power generators, HVAC and fire suppression systems. You will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the critical infrastructure, supervising colocation and specialist vendors, acting as first responders to incidents, and becoming subject matter experts for the facility.

Key job responsibilities

As a Data Center Engineering Operations Technician, your responsibilities will include:

  • Manage your site, including the collocation vendor and associated sub-contractors, ensuring that all work is performed to AWS high standards, observing established practices, procedures & local legislation.
  • Reviewing the management of both routine and corrective maintenance on a variety of critical systems such as: switch gear, generators, UPS systems, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, building monitoring systems, etc.
  • Establish performance benchmarks, conduct analyses & prepare reports on all aspects of the critical facility infrastructure operations & maintenance.
  • Create and implement projects to increase current facility capacity, efficiency, sustainability & reliability.
Additional Role Requirements
  • This role may involve bending, lifting, stretching, and reaching, ascending and descending ladders, stairs, and gangways safely
  • This role has a rostered on-call requirement to provide 24x7 support. This may change based on the future needs of the business
  • Must have suitable IT skills with knowledge and experience using Microsoft applications.
  • Due to the location of our sites, candidates should possess a valid driver's license and their own vehicle.

Basic Qualifications
  • 4+ years of relevant work in a data center or other critical environment experience
  • 5+ years of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience in vendor management
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of construction or project management experience
  • Electrical or mechanical Journeyman License
  • operating engineering license such as DC II, DC III, or equivalent
