Job description

Engineering Integration Manager – Port Infrastructure

Ferry Holdings – Wellington Central, North Island

Ferry Holdings Limited (FHL) is delivering one of New Zealand’s most significant transport infrastructure programmes — replacing the Cook Strait ferries and developing the port infrastructure required to support reliable, rail‑enabled inter‑island connections for decades to come.

Established in 2025, FHL is a Crown‑owned Schedule 4A company leading the commercial negotiations, technical planning and delivery partner coordination required to bring new ferries and associated infrastructure into service by 2029. We’re a small, agile organisation bringing together specialist expertise to deliver a complex, high‑profile programme critical to New Zealand’s economic resilience and future transport sustainability.

About the role

We’re looking for a senior engineering leader to drive whole‑of‑system integration across vessels, wharves, linkspans, marine structures, terminals, rail systems and operational interfaces.

This role provides programme‑wide oversight across all engineering disciplines and delivery partners (KiwiRail, CentrePort Wellington, Port Marlborough, shipyard and suppliers). You’ll ensure engineering interfaces are understood and closed, risks are visible, requirements are met, and the completed assets collectively deliver a safe, reliable and fully integrated transport system. Acting as a key bridge across bilateral and co‑working delivery arrangements, you’ll facilitate the information, decisions and dependencies needed to keep ship, port and rail outcomes aligned to common requirements and the integrated master programme.

You won’t be designing or constructing assets — your focus is integration assurance. You’ll bring confidence that delivery partner evidence demonstrates compliance, readiness and seamless transition from build into operations. You’ll work through and alongside the parties responsible for delivery, helping coordinate the path through completion, assurance, acceptance and operational readiness without displacing their contractual accountabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead programme‑wide engineering integration requirements, processes and information standards.
  • Maintain visibility of engineering risks, dependencies and Entry into Service constraints.
  • Provide whole‑of‑system oversight across marine, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and operational interfaces.
  • Define and govern interface ownership, evidence requirements, escalation routes and closure criteria.
  • Facilitate cross-party information dependencies, technical decisions and interface closure across FHL, the ports, KiwiRail, shipyard and suppliers, aligned to agreed requirements and the Integrated Master Programme.
  • Provide engineering integration and interface management leadership through design development, ensuring cross-party technical interfaces, dependencies and requirements are actively coordinated and resolved to support an integrated ship–shore system.
  • Lead programme-level engineering change and configuration management from design through construction, completion and operational handover, ensuring changes and their cross-system impacts are understood, coordinated and appropriately controlled.
  • Support engineering governance, V&V frameworks, testing, commissioning and operational handover.
  • Facilitate coordinated completion and acceptance activities across delivery partners, including testing, commissioning, assurance, certification and resolution of outstanding integration matters.
  • Prepare monthly engineering integration dashboards covering design maturity, interface closure, traceability, evidence gaps and technical risks.
  • Support the coordinated flow and readiness of O&M manuals, asset information, training and familiarisation inputs required for effective handover and timely transition into operations.
  • Maintain a whole‑of‑system focus so that integration and acceptance risks are identified early and managed on a best-for-programme basis, protecting Entry into Service, cost and programme outcomes.
About you

You’re a decisive, self‑led engineering professional who thrives in complex, multidisciplinary environments. You bring strong systems thinking, broad engineering knowledge and the ability to influence across multiple organisations.

You will have:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) — essential.
  • CPEng or eligibility — highly desirable.
  • 10+ years’ experience delivering large, multidisciplinary infrastructure projects, ideally including commissioning and completion phases, and delivering projects where operational deadlines cannot slip.
  • Background across both engineering consultancies and Tier 1 construction organisations.
  • Proven experience in transport, maritime or heavy infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of civil, structural, marine, mechanical, electrical and operational systems integration.
  • Experience managing engineering interfaces, assurance processes, commissioning and operational handover.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and the ability to navigate challenging relationships.

This is a rare opportunity to shape a nationally significant transport system and influence engineering outcomes across multiple delivery partners. You’ll work at the centre of a complex, high‑profile programme with long‑term impact for New Zealand’s transport resilience and future ferry operations.
