Job description

Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

We are looking for an Engineer – Cloud and Infrastructure to help operate, support and continuously improve the University of Canterbury’s hybrid technology environment. You will work across cloud services and core datacentre infrastructure, using practical engineering, automation and disciplined service management to keep critical platforms running well. This is an established, hands‑on technical role for someone who enjoys solving problems, improving how work gets done and collaborating with others to deliver dependable services.

Working within the Cloud and Infrastructure team, you will:

  • operate and maintain cloud and datacentre platforms, including public clouds (Azure and AWS), Windows and Linux servers, virtualisation, storage, backup and monitoring services
  • investigate incidents, service requests and technical problems, contributing to root-cause analysis and lasting solutions
  • plan and implement approved infrastructure changes with appropriate testing, documentation and peer review
  • use PowerShell, scripting, automation and infrastructure-as-code practices to reduce repetitive work and improve consistency
  • monitor platform health, follow up exceptions and identify opportunities to strengthen reliability, security and supportability
  • maintain practical runbooks, technical records and knowledge articles
  • contribute to service reviews, post-incident learning and continuous improvement
  • work constructively with engineers, service teams, project teams and stakeholders across the University.

You will have room to work independently on standard engineering activities while being supported by colleagues when broader design, architectural input or higher‑risk decisions are required.

Mōu | Who You Are

You will ideally have some relevant experience in cloud, infrastructure, systems administration or platform engineering and bring practical experience supporting production technology in a complex organisation. You are curious, methodical and comfortable balancing responsive operational support with planned engineering and improvement work.

You bring demonstrated experience in:

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with a focus on continuous improvement and finding practical solutions.
  • Sound understanding of cloud and infrastructure technologies, with experience in areas such as Azure, AWS, Windows/Linux and virtualisation.
  • A clear communicator and collaborative team player who can explain technical concepts to a range of audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality, documentation and good operational practices.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in IT, computer science, engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Relevant cloud, infrastructure, automation or Microsoft certifications are desirable.
  • An alignment with our organisation's values and culture, promoting a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Experience supporting cloud and datacentre environments.
  • Experience with automation, scripting or infrastructure monitoring.
  • Experience working in a tertiary, research or similarly complex organisation.
