Job summary

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Whangārei Hospital in Northland is seeking exceptional Emergency Registrars to commence February 2027.

You will gain experience across the ED with a team of experienced Emergency Physicians and structured teaching, including ultrasound and dedicated RSI sessions, in-situ sim, and QI opportunities.

Qualifications

• Mandatory: 12 months ED experience
• Mandatory: Up to date ACLS (or equivalent)
• Desirable: Experience at ED senior house officer or registrar level
• Desirable: Related experience in medicine, ICU, paediatrics and other acute specialties
• BASIC: Ultrasound skills and courses

Responsibilities

• Accredited for 24 months ACEM advanced training and paediatric logbook requirements
• Strong track record of supporting entry into ACEM training and exam support
• Work side by side with a dedicated team including 23 very experienced Emergency Physicians
• 4 hours teaching weekly which is protected, consultant delivered and highly rated
• Weekly in-situ sim training on all aspects of resuscitation
• Formal ultrasound training programme and supervised practice with 2 sonosite machines
• Gain experience in many procedures and develop your clinical skills
• Rotations to other specialty services (ICU, Anaesthetics, Paediatrics, and Medicine) are established
• Dedicated RSI training sessions and rostered theatre time for airway experience
• Dedicated shifts for audit / QI and opportunities to develop your QI skills

We see about 45,000 patients a year, or about 120-160 patients a day. Whangarei ED serves a population of roughly 180,000, with a catchment area that stretches from Cape Reinga 4.5 hours north, to Te Hana an hour south, encompassing Kaitaia, Rawene, Bay of Islands and Dargaville referral hospitals.

About the Role

• Emergency Medicine staff actively utilise ultrasound in their patient care, with two machines in the ED including the latest sonosite.
