Job summary

The New Zealand Government is hiring for a full-time, permanent position at Whangārei Hospital, commencing February 2027. This role involves providing emergency medical care while gaining extensive training in various procedures and practices.

Role Details

Whangārei Hospital – Full‑time, Permanent – Commencing February2027.

Key Responsibilities

• Accredited for 24months ACEM advanced training and paediatric logbook requirements.
• Strong track record of supporting entry into ACEM training and exam support.
• Work side by side with a dedicated team including 23 very experienced Emergency Physicians.
• 4hours weekly teaching, protected, consultant‑delivered and highly rated.
• Weekly in‑situ simulation training covering all aspects of resuscitation.
• Formal ultrasound training programme with supervised practice using two Sonosite machines.
• Experience in a wide range of procedures to develop clinical skills.
• Rotations to other specialty services (ICU, Anaesthetics, Paediatrics, and Medicine).
• Dedicated RSI training sessions and rostered theatre time for airway experience.
• Dedicated shifts for audit/QI and opportunities to develop QI skills.
• Well supported by all other departments.
• Emergency Medicine staff actively utilise ultrasound in patient care.

Mandatory Qualifications

• 12months ED experience.
• Up‑to‑date ACLS (or equivalent).
• Desire to develop or deepen understanding of TeAoMāori (The Māori World).

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience at ED senior house officer or registrar level.
• Related experience in medicine, ICU, paediatrics and other acute specialties.
• APLS, ATLS/ETM/trauma courses.
• BASIC ultrasound skills and courses.

Whangarei Hospital provides secondary care services to a large rural region with high levels of social deprivation, an ageing population and high health needs.
