Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer with a specialization in power distribution and protection to join a major utility infrastructure provider serving Queenstown, Eastern Cape. You will design distribution networks, perform power system studies, and develop protection schemes to ensure reliability and safety of the grid.

The role demands 5+ years of experience, strong analytical skills, and proficiency with ETAP/DigSILENT/CYME; remote work with site visits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a Power Systems specialization.
• Minimum of 5 years' experience in electrical power distribution design and protection engineering.
• Proficient with power system analysis software (ETAP, DigSILENT PowerFactory, CYME).
• Strong knowledge of protection relaying principles and application.
• Experience with SCADA systems and distribution automation is a plus.
• Familiarity with South African grid codes and operational practices.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple design tasks.
• Registered or eligible for ECSA registration.
• Remote work flexibility with occasional site visits.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop electrical distribution systems, including overhead lines and underground cabling.
• Perform power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, and stability analysis using specialized software.
• Specify and design protection schemes, select protective relays, and coordinate protection settings.
• Prepare detailed electrical drawings, schematics, specifications, and project reports.
• Ensure designs comply with utility standards, national regulations (SANS), and safety requirements.
• Collaborate with planning, operations, and construction teams to ensure seamless project execution.
• Review designs submitted by external consultants and contractors.
• Provide technical support and guidance during construction and commissioning phases.
• Investigate power quality issues and system disturbances, recommending solutions.
• Stay abreast of advancements in power distribution technology and protection systems.
