Job summary

Habit Health seeks an experienced EAP Counsellor for our Central Wellington office to support employees and whānau with personal and workplace issues. You will work across a diverse client base aged 11 through to retirement, delivering evidence‑based counselling via in‑person, video and telehealth, and providing on‑site support after workplace events.

You will be supported by supervision, a strong clinical framework, and opportunities for ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

• 5+ years’ counselling experience post‑degree.
• Current professional registration and APC with NZAC/DAPAANZ/SWRB/NZCCA.
• Experience with workplace and family‑focused counselling.

Responsibilities

Our EAP team provides wraparound support for employees and their whānau, offering counselling, coaching, wellbeing guidance and practical help when life gets challenging.

About The Role

As part of this growing and highly respected service, our Central Wellington office is seeking an experienced and compassionate Counsellor to join the team. This is a meaningful role where every day brings the opportunity to make a real difference. You’ll be supported by a strong clinical framework, regular supervision and a team that genuinely cares about your wellbeing and professional growth.

As an EAP Counsellor, you will work with a diverse client base aged 11 through to retirement, supporting both personal and workplace issues. In a single day, you may work with senior leaders (COO, CFO), employees, young adults, and children, as well as family members eligible for EAP support. You will also provide specialist counselling across areas such as trauma, grief and loss, neurodiversity, rainbow communities, academic settings, parenting, health‑related adjustment (including vision loss), addictions, behavioural addictions, depression, post‑natal depression, adoption, and eldercare.

Main Responsibilities

• Deliver focused, evidence‑based interventions to help clients build coping mechanisms for work and life
• Provide on‑site support following disruptive or traumatic workplace events
• Deliver counselling via in‑person, video, and telehealth sessions
• Provide training and group work to customer organisations
• Manage a varied caseload across the Wellington region
• Participate in regular supervision and professional development

You’ll thrive in this role if you have

Wellington is a unique environment — our clients include major Government Ministries, large private organisations and service providers who expect a high‑quality, bespoke service. Counsellors must be able to assess and treat presenting issues within 3-6 sessions, requiring strong clinical judgement, professionalism, and confidence.

We’re looking for:

• Experience supporting families, couples and young people (11-17)
• Confidence working with senior leaders, employees and workplace referrals
• Skills in trauma response, psychological first aid and brief interventions
• Cultural competency to work with Māori, Pasifika and multicultural communities
• Specialist interest areas such as rainbow, neurodiversity, disability, refugees and migrants
• Group facilitation or training experience
• A supervision qualification (or interest in developing toward this)
• Proven ability to work autonomously within a structured environment, with regular supervision and support available

In order to be considered, you must have

• The legal right to work in New Zealand
• Current Professional Registration and APC (NZAC, DAPAANZ, SWRB or NZCCA)
• Minimum 5 years’ post‑study counselling experience
