Job summary

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora in Gisborne seeks an experienced Duty Nurse Manager to provide 24-hour operational coordination, clinical leadership, patient flow management and resource allocation across Gisborne Hospital.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Nurse, you will lead staffing, support safe patient care, manage after-hours risk, and guide the team during emergencies, working with nursing, medical, allied health and operations to deliver equitable health outcomes.

Qualifications

• Current NZ Registered Nurse APC
• PDRP Expert or Designated Senior Nurse
• At least five years of recent clinical leadership experience
• Strong leadership, problem-solving, decision-making and communication skills
• Knowledge of CCDM and patient acuity tools
• Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and improved Māori health outcomes
• Ability to prioritise and lead in complex situations

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic registered nurse to join our Office of the Chief Nurse team as a Duty Nurse Manager (DNM). This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for providing 24-hour operational coordination, clinical leadership, patient flow management, and resource allocation across Gisborne Hospital.

As Duty Nurse Manager, you will coordinate staffing resources, support safe and effective patient care, manage organisational risk after hours, and provide leadership during emergency and incident responses. You will work collaboratively with nursing, medical, allied health and operational teams to ensure the delivery of high-quality care and positive outcomes for patients and whānau.

This role sits within the Office of the Chief Nurse and reports to the Deputy Chief Nurse. You will be part of a highly skilled leadership team committed to supporting clinical excellence, workforce coordination, patient safety, and equitable health outcomes.

About you

You will be an experienced nursing leader and will have:

• Current New Zealand Registered Nurse Annual Practising Certificate (APC
• PDRP Expert or Designated Senior Nurse level
• At least five years of recent clinical experience with leadership responsibilities such as shift coordination or clinical leadership.
• Strong clinical leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills.
• Knowledge of Care Capacity Demand Management (CCDM) and patient acuity tools.
• A demonstrated commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and improving health outcomes for Māori.
• The ability to prioritise effectively, manage competing demands, and lead confidently in complex and challenging situations.
