Job summary

The Todd Energy Aquatic Centre in New Plymouth, part of New Plymouth District Council, is hiring a Duty Lifeguard. You will supervise pool activities, maintain water quality, and support daily centre operations while leading other lifeguards in a safe, welcoming environment.

Applicants must hold a Comprehensive First Aid and Pool Lifeguard certificate; Water Treatment qualification is a plus. Flexible roster 5:00am–7:30pm, 2 of 3 weekends, permanent full-time position with a salary of

  • Leadership and mentoring to other lifeguards.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Hold a current Comprehensive First Aid and a Pool Lifeguard Practising certificate.
  • A current Swimming Pool Water Treatment qualification is an advantage but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Actively supervise all activities within the centre to maintain health and safety standards and respond to incidents and emergencies.
  • Perform water chemical tests to ensure pool water quality.
  • Assist with identifying maintenance requirements.

The Todd Energy Aquatic Centre, located in New Plymouth, is a vibrant community facility offering a wide range of aquatic activities and amenities. The centre provides swim lessons, aqua fitness classes, and competitive training programmes; supporting health, fitness, recreation, and water safety across the community. The Opportunity | Te āheinga

We are seeking a dedicated and responsible Duty Lifeguard to dive into our team! This role involves ensuring the safety of all patrons, supervising pool activities, and assisting with daily operations of the aquatic centre. You will be an integral part of our senior team, providing leadership to the Assistant Duty Lifeguard and Lifeguards and contributing to a safe and welcoming environment. Join a supportive team passionate about water safety, community wellbeing and delivering exceptional customer experiences.


You’ll need to be flexible and available to work on a rotating roster between 5:00am and 7:30pm, including 2 out of every 3 weekends. Early birds and weekend warriors - this one’s for you!



  • Ensure health and safety is maintained through actively supervising all activities within the centre that meet industry standards and respond to any incidents and emergency situations.

  • Perform water chemical tests to ensure quality of the pool water.

  • Assist with the identification of maintenance requirements.

  • Leadership and mentoring to other lifeguards.

  • Actively ensure that legislative requirements and Council policies and procedures are fulfilled, particularly in relation to all key relevant legislation.

  • Hold a current Comprehensive First Aid and a Pool Lifeguard Practicing certificate.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
