Job description

At Fonterra Te Mātāpuna, we want everyone to feel they can be themselves. Whether you're early in your career or ready for your next step, Fonterra offers a unique opportunity to grow with a global dairy co-operative that values care, collaboration, and contribution. Owned by New Zealand dairy farmers and supported by a dedicated team, we are all working together to create a better future. Imagine tomorrow with us, where your career can grow, and you can create positive change.

We love Kiwi dairy farmers and know they're pretty awesome. For generations, they have relied on hard work, ingenuity, and each other to create the kind of goodness that fuels our families, connects our communities and supports our economy. At Farm Source, the same co-operative spirit that our farmers and their communities share drives our team. We make farming easier so farmers can continue to concentrate on what they do best – producing high-quality New Zealand milk in the most sustainable way. This means growing and supporting the right people – smart people with plenty of 'roll-your-sleeves up' energy to rise to the challenge. Whether you're on the farm getting your gumboots dirty or connecting over a coffee at our local stores, you'll get the mahi done as part of a trusted team – backed by good people, the right products, innovative solutions, and industry-leading expertise.

We're looking for a Data Engineer to join our Farm Source Digital, Data & AI team and help build the trusted data foundations that power reporting, analytics, digital products and AI across Farm Source. This is an exciting opportunity to work on large-scale data platforms and data products that support decision-making across the Co-operative and help deliver better outcomes for New Zealand farmers. You'll design, build and optimise data pipelines, models and reusable datasets, ensuring data is reliable, well-architected and ready for use across a wide range of business, analytics and digital solutions. Reporting to the Data Products Manager, working closely with the Data Design Lead, data owners, business stakeholders and enterprise platform teams, playing a key role in the evolution of Farm Source's data capabilities and supporting the transition of critical data products to Fonterra's enterprise data platform.

You're a collaborative and pragmatic Data Engineer who enjoys solving complex data challenges and building scalable solutions that create real business value. You take pride in delivering high-quality, reliable data assets and are comfortable working across both technical and business teams to understand requirements, manage dependencies and drive outcomes. You'll enjoy working in an environment where you can contribute to modern data platforms, support analytics and AI initiatives, and help shape best practice data engineering across the business. You already work independently and take ownership of work created, are able to navigate between central enterprise teams and business unit teams, participate in technical and architectural discussions and confidently articulate view points.

You'll bring:

  • 5+ years' experience designing and delivering data engineering solutions within medium to large or complex organisations
  • Strong SQL and Python experience, with a track record of building robust data pipelines, models and reusable datasets
  • Experienced with cloud-based database platforms such as Databricks and Microsoft products including Fabric, Power BI, and associated tools like pipelines, dataflows, ETL, and ELT processes.
  • Experience monitoring and optimising jobs and pipelines,
  • Experience supporting analytics, reporting, digital product or AI use cases through trusted and scalable data capabilities
  • Experience working with Salesforce and Google Analytics data is advantageous
  • We are migrating from MS SQL to Databricks, so you'll be comfortable navigating ambiguity, taking ownership and helping shape the best path forward. C++ and SAP ECC experience, or the aptitude to quickly develop capability in these areas, would be highly regarded.
  • Ability to assess the quality and accuracy of information, determine the most appropriate approach to analysing and disseminating it, and support existing data governance and management practices.
  • Comfortable guiding and advising stakeholders to ensure adherence to best practices in data warehouse architecture, documentation, and version control.
