The Flatpack Co is a growing eight-figure DTC brand based in Mount Maunganui, NZ. We create beds and mattresses sold online, with a strong emphasis on content that resonates across Kiwi audiences.
We’re hiring a creative strategist who edits, tests hooks, and shapes messaging for multiple audiences. You’ll work with founders, a small team, and UGC creators, learning fast in a fast-growth environment.
$90,000 – $110,000 per year + company profit-share
We're The Flatpack Co, and we're changing the way Kiwis sleep. Buying a good bed in New Zealand has always been harder and more expensive than it has to be: a showroom, a pushy salesperson, and paying thousands more than you should for something you sleep on every night. That's a real problem, and we're solving it. We design our own beds and mattresses and sell them online, without the showroom markups, helping Kiwis save thousands on a genuinely good bed.
It's working. In just a few short years we've already helped more than 20,000 Kiwis sleep better, and save thousands doing it. The thing we're proudest of is our reviews, and the impact behind them: go read a few, people really do love what we make.
We're a small, supportive, tight-knit team: seven of us, mostly in our twenties. We split our time between working from home and our HQ in the heart of Mount Maunganui, less than a block from the beach, which means proper coffee strolls and the odd surf check at lunch when the waves are good. On a real mission, without taking ourselves too seriously.
Creative strategy might be the most exciting job in ecommerce right now, and everyone we rate at it got there the same way: by making a lot of things. They know what a hook does because they've built a hundred of them.
That's what this role is: a creative strategist who edits. You'd have your hands on the work every week (editing, filming, shipping) while learning to shape what gets made: the personas we target, the messaging angles we test, the offers each audience sees.
And you'd be learning it with a real machine behind you. We're an eight-figure DTC brand with genuine ad spend running every day (Meta is our biggest channel, with organic in the mix), so your ideas get tested in the real world, the analytics come back, and you find out what actually works. You'd work alongside our founders, our media buyer and our agency partners. We think we've got a pretty cool story, and we'd love your help bringing it to the rest of New Zealand.
And here's the fun part: our customers are all sorts, from the 55-year-old who's only ever bought beds in a store to the 25-year-old furnishing their first flat who'd never set foot in one. You'll make content for all of them, seen by hundreds of thousands of Kiwis, and learn to think strategically about completely different audiences. It's rare to get that range in one seat.
Worth knowing up front:
Most of our editing happens in CapCut. If you've got Premiere Pro or cinematic skills too, great, we'll use them. But the thing we hire for is taste: knowing which clip to choose, when to cut, and why.
You don't have to be on camera. We've got that covered. We need the person behind the camera and in the edit, though if you're happy to be on camera too, that's an extra bonus.
Editing two or three days a week: around ten videos a week, all for one brand you'll get to know inside out (this is where the judgment comes from, and it stays part of the job)
Reviewing how your work performed (hook rates, watch time, what won and why) and folding what you learn into the next round
Helping craft messaging and offers: the personas, angles and hooks each audience gets
Filming our team and founders in a natural, engaging way, being the one who says "one more take, try it like this"
Helping plan and run shoot days: beach, office, street
Working with our UGC creators: clipping their footage, spotting the gems, and suggesting who we should work with next
Owning our content library and building our content systems with us, so a winning ad can become five new versions in an afternoon
A lot of our best ads look like a mate filmed them, but we're just as open to polished and produced. We make a wide range of styles for a wide range of people, and knowing when to use which is half the skill.
Creative strategist is one of the fastest-growing, best-paid roles in ecommerce right now, and this seat is how you become one. We've grown 100%+ in each of the past two years and we're on track to double again, and the creative engine is being built right now, which means whoever takes this seat grows with it: more strategy, more ownership, more of the decisions, as fast as you earn them. You'd be learning on purpose, not by osmosis, from founders with deep ecommerce experience: why an angle works, how to read an ad account, when a winner is done. A couple of years in, you'll be the kind of person other brands start approaching. We're okay with that.
The experience, the portfolio, and the taste to show for it. You've made content that worked, you know why it worked, and you can do it again here.
You're probably already:
working in content or creative, whether as an editor, content creator, videographer, or an agency creative/content strategist, for a brand, a client list, or yourself (organic or paid, either is great)
scrolling constantly, with real opinions on why some videos hold you and others dont
noticing the details: the clip choice, the pause before the line lands, the first two seconds
diving into AI tools, not just curious about them but actually using them
On the AI point: we mean it. We're building our own AI infrastructure for content creation, in‑house, and whoever takes this seat learns the cutting edge of it alongside the people building it. If you're already playing with AI tools and keen to go a lot deeper, we'll hand you the kit.
And most importantly: you love making things.
You don't need a marketing or ecommerce background, we can teach you that. If you've been making great organic or paid content and you'd love to make it your career, we'd love to hear from you.
you're after a purely strategic role right now, with a team underneath you doing the making (here you'll learn the strategy by making things yourself)
editing feels like a stepping stone you're trying to hurry past
you need lots of structure and direction before you can get moving
This role is based at Mount Maunganui, and there are two ways to make it work from Auckland: be at the Mount two to three days a week (the shoots happen there), or, our favourite, let us relocate you to the beach. We'll pay to get you there, and the office is less than a block from the water.
You'd be joining an eight-figure DTC brand that's grown 100%+ in each of the past two years and is on track to double again, with all the opportunity that comes with a hyper‑growth business, and a real chance to help build a great Kiwi brand. For the right person, this is a pivotal career role
You'll work directly with the founders and CEO, including 15+ years of e‑commerce experience, and learn fast, on purpose
People genuinely love what we make. Helping Kiwis sleep better and save thousands is the thing we’re proudest of
We're building a cutting‑edge AI toolkit of content, and you’d learn the way this craft is heading from day one. The beach is less than a block away.
$90,000–$110,000 + our company profit‑share, plus relocation support if you’re moving. And honestly: for the right person, we’re happy to pay more. We’d rather pay properly for the best than settle.
