Job summary

Department of Corrections NZ is seeking a Corrections Officer for Mount Eden Corrections Facility in Auckland. You will supervise inmates, escort them to education programmes and manage daily routines, with a focus on safety and respectful engagement.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

A Corrections Officer works in a challenging environment supported by a team of professional colleagues. You will engage with people in a positive way and will have the opportunity to not only change the lives of the people in Prison but also whānau by influencing change through your interactions. You will spend much of your time working within the unit(s) supervising people in Prison with their daily routines, escorting them around the site to education programmes or other appointments. You will monitor, assess, and manage behaviour and safety, help control and lessen any conflict within the unit(s).

To be eligible you need:

  • The legal right to work in New Zealand or a Work Visa with at least 24 months remaining*
  • A full New Zealand Driver Licence (or be eligible to obtain one)
  • To declare any conflicts of interest and previous convictions**
  • To be medically fit for employment and complete a Medical Assessment and Physical Readiness Assessment

Our prisons operate 24/7 - applicants must be able to work shifts on a rotating roster. In line with our Strategy Hōkai Rangi, we are prioritising applications from people who have experience in a Kaupapa Māori or Pasifika environment and/or a willingness to learn. Please highlight any relevant experience and/or language skills in your application.

* Applicants must have the legal right to work in New Zealand. In line with Immigration New Zealand requirements, we are required to give priority to candidates who already hold this right. As a result, we may not be able to support visa applications for this role.

Ngā painga | The benefits

The starting salary for this position is $70,019 per annum. Once in the role there are opportunities to increase your salary as you achieve national qualifications (Level 3 at $74,697, Level 3+ at $76,697, Level 4 at $80,213 and Level 4+ at $82,213).
