Job summary

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking Health Care Assistants for the Medical Ward at Hutt Hospital to join a fast-paced, supportive team. This full-time on-site role involves patient care, meal delivery, bed care, and supply restocking across a rotating roster from AM to night shifts.

You will support patients with varying medical conditions, including dementia and delirium, in a collaborative ward environment with ACNMs, RNs, HCAs, and educators providing ongoing support.

Qualifications

• Possess Health and Wellbeing: Health Assistance Level 3 qualification, or willingness to complete it within an agreed timeframe.
• Warm, compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
• Deliver consistently high-quality care across all tasks and interactions.
• Flexible, and able to adjust to changing needs and priorities.
• Communicate clearly with patients, whānau, and the healthcare team.
• Ability to work in a team environment and maintain a calm disposition under pressure.
• Accept direction and delegation and seek assistance when needed.
• Experience managing patients with dementia and confusion is ideal.
• Self-motivation and initiative.
• Hold the legal right to work in New Zealand.

Responsibilities

• Assist with personal care, provide support for patients under observation and engagement, and help with ward functioning.
• Deliver meals, make beds, restock supplies, and maintain a safe, efficient care environment.
• Care for patients experiencing confusion, delirium, and dementia-related behaviours.
• Engage therapeutically with individuals exhibiting BPSD and deliver compassionate, patient-centred care.
