Job summary

Spectrum Care in Upper Hutt is seeking casual support workers to assist four young adults aged 21-24, providing 24-hour support in a loving home. You’ll help residents live their best lives, build trust with families, and participate in activities in the home and neighbourhood.

Ideal candidates are warm, intuitive, patient, with good English communication and a willingness to learn, including NZQA Level 2-4 Health and Wellbeing qualifications. A NZ driver's licence is required.

Qualifications

  • Clear verbal and written English required.
  • Able to pass NZ Police check.
  • Experience supporting people with disabilities preferred but not essential.
  • Reliable, committed and passionate about helping people.
  • Full NZ driver's licence required.
  • Support to obtain NZQA Level 2-4 Health & Wellbeing qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with intimate care and daily living activities.
  • Support residents at home and in the community.
  • Build trust with residents and families.
  • Use a range of communication methods to understand needs.
  • Push a wheelchair and participate in activities including swimming.

We have a lovely home in Upper Hutt, where 4 youngadultsaged 21-24 live, with 24 hr support from a great staff team.We’re looking for casual staff member to join us, to help people livetheirbest lives.

The4flatmates have loving and supportive families, who continue to bevery involvedin theirkidslives, so as well as building trust with the flatmates,you’llneed to build trust with families too.

You will enjoy being involved in their lives and seeing them actively exploring new opportunities in their home and neighbourhood.You'llneed to have humour, warmth, goodenergyand the initiative to organise things that make life fun for these fabulous young people. They communicate in a variety of ways; gestures, some words, vocalisations, facial expressions, and some communication devices and tools. A key skill is being intuitive and patient, so you can really tune in towhat'sgoing on for each person and respond to them.With your help, these wonderful people will continue to lead good lives, enjoying and exploring whatever their neighbourhood has to offer and keeping connected with their whanau and friends.

As the flatmates have physical support needs, your role as a support worker will include intimate care like helping to go to the toilet and have showers. You will need to be respectful and intuitive as you do this and be vigilant to their physical health and emotional comfort, giving them as much voice,choiceand control as possible.You’llneed to be fit enough to push a wheelchair and willing to get in the swimming pool to enjoy some fun water play.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent, clear, understandable verbal and written Englishisa pre-requisite to be considered for this role
  • Able to pass a NZ police check
  • Experience supporting people with disabilities, and or mental health issues, and/or behaviours that can be challenging is desirable but not necessary
  • Reliability, commitment, and passion for working with people
  • A full New Zealand driver's licence
  • An interest inattaininga Community Support Worker Level Three or above qualification- we can support you to achieve this while you work
  • The ability to use a computer effectively, including programs such as Word, Internet Explorer, and email

If you are a non-resident applying for this role you must meet the following INZ Level 3 skill requirements to be considered:

  • at least 2 years of relevant work experience, or
  • a relevant qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) — this must be at least a level 4 qualification for a role at skill level 3, or a diploma for a role at skill level 2.
