Victoria University of Wellington is seeking Community Advisers for the Accommodation Independent Living team on permanent part-time and fixed-term part-time contracts (15–30 hours/week). Roles commence in November 2026 (permanent) and January 2027 (fixed-term).

The role focuses on connecting residents to university services, wellbeing, and a safe, inclusive living environment. Key duties include coordinating events, maintaining budgets, and providing hall administration support.

Qualifications

  • Proven knowledge of communal living and living in halls.
  • Experience organizing events and managing budgets.
  • Experience across cultures including Maori, Pasifika, and international students.
  • Computer literacy and ability to use social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
  • Able to facilitate events/programmes during the academic year.
  • Mature, responsible and able to model professional behaviour.
  • NZ clean restricted driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Event coordination and administration including establishing your hall events calendar.
  • Organising and coordinating events.
  • Plan events using hall information and gather feedback from residents.
  • Complete event audits and reporting.
  • Hall admin support, Star Rez reporting, answer calls and reception.
  • Promote and monitor appropriate behaviour by residents and model communal living values.
  • Respond to emergencies and evacuations and escalate to on-call manager.

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a number of Community Advisers on a permanent part-time and fixed-term part-time contract (15 to 30 hours per week). Community Advisers in the University’s Accommodation Independent Living team with permanent roles begin in November 2026 and fixed term roles begin in January 2027.

University Accommodation has a focus on connecting residents to university services ensuring their academic success, wellbeing, welfare and health and safety is front of mind. This includes an environment that is safe, fostering a sense of community, inclusion and belonging, and delivering a cohesive, cross-university integrated student experience that protects and enhances the University’s reputation nationally and internationally.

Key responsibilities:

  • Event coordination and administration including establishing your hall events calendar.
  • Organising and coordinating events.
  • Use existing hall information to plan events specifically targeted to the current cohort and gauge interest and feedback from Hall residents about events they've enjoyed or would like to have.
  • Complete event audits and reporting.
  • Hall Admin support, Star Rez reporting, answer phone calls and reception.
  • Promoting and monitoring appropriate behaviour by residents and role modelling appropriate communal living behaviour.
  • Respond to emergency and evacuation situations and escalating to on call manager.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate who is passionate about working with students and creating a positive living and learning environment, is a team player, well-organised, proactive, quick to learn, and adaptable. You do not need to be a current student to apply.

You will be a mature, fun, flexible advisers who can balance support for the students and meet the University’s obligations for pastoral care in compliance with the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021.

Key requirements:

  • Proven knowledge of what it takes to live successfully in communal living.
  • Experience organising and delivering events and maintaining budgets.
  • Experience living or working across cultures; with a particular understanding of Maori, Pasifika, and international students.
  • Computer literacy and knowledge; ability to use social media (Facebook, Instagram etc.)
  • Able to facilitate eventsprogrammesas required during the academic year.
  • Mature and responsible; maintains professional and appropriate relationships.
  • Demonstrates previous success at being a positive role model.
  • Demonstrates initiative and sound judgement, with an ability to think on your feet.
  • At least an NZ clean restricted driver’s license
