Job summary

Nelson College for Girls in Nelson City is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Chef to join CJ House, preparing nutritious, homestyle meals for boarding students and staff. This permanent, part-time role is 16 hours per week with term-time hours and a start date of Sunday 11 October 2026.

You will cook to a high standard, follow menus, cater for dietary requirements, monitor portions, assist with stock control and food costing, and ensure meals are prepared and served on time while

Qualifications

• Formal cookery qualification or equivalent training.
• Professional cooking experience.
• Experience in school/hostel or similar environments is an advantage.
• Strong organisational and communication skills.
• Police Vet required during appointment process.

Responsibilities

Nelson College for Girls is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Chef to join the team at CJ House, preparing nutritious, appealing and homestyle meals for our boarding students and staff. This role would suit someone who takes pride in their cooking, is organised and practical, and enjoys working in a busy kitchen environment.

This is a permanent, part-time, term time only position of 16 hours per week. The preferred start date is Sunday 11 October 2026. Additional hours during term holidays may occasionally be available by arrangement.

The Chef will be responsible for preparing, cooking and presenting meals to a high standard, following established menus and recipes while contributing ideas for new meals. The role includes catering for dietary requirements and allergies, monitoring food quality and portion sizes, assisting with stock control and food costing, and ensuring meals are prepared and served on time.

Food safety and hygiene are a key part of the role. The successful applicant will follow the Nelson College for Girls Hostel Food Control Plan and New Zealand Food Safety requirements, maintain food safety records and ensure the kitchen, equipment and work areas are clean, safe and well organised.

We are looking for someone with a formal cookery qualification or equivalent culinary training and professional cooking experience. Experience catering for larger groups in a school, hostel, catering or similar environment would be an advantage. Strong organisational and communication skills, the ability to work independently and a positive, professional approach are essential.

A current and satisfactory Police Vet will be required as part of the appointment process.
