Job summary

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waitematā is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist to work across Microbiology and Biochemistry in a busy hospital laboratory. This casual role requires flexibility to roster across a 24/7 schedule at North Shore and Waitākere sites.

You will bring registration with the New Zealand Medical Sciences Council (or eligible), strong communication, solid computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook), and a collaborative, team‑oriented approach to patient diagnostics.

Qualifications

• Must have a current annual practising certificate and registration with the New Zealand Medical Sciences Council, or eligibility to register with the Council.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Demonstrated flexible approach to shift work.

Responsibilities

• Work across Biochemistry and Microbiology in a 24/7 roster at North Shore and Waitākere Hospital sites.
• Provide a high-quality, innovative diagnostic laboratory service.
• Be a team player in a busy hospital laboratory and manage competing priorities.

About the Role

As a Medical Laboratory Scientist Microbiology/Biochemistry, you will provide a high quality, innovative diagnostic laboratory service that meets the needs of our patients, consumers, and whānau.

About Us

Health New Zealand Waitematā provides health services to approximately 650,000 residents of the North Shore, Waitakere, and Rodney areas. It has the largest population of any district health area.

About you

To be considered for this role, you must have:

• A current annual practising certificate and registration with the New Zealand Medical Sciences Council, or eligibility to register with the Council.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• A demonstrated flexible approach to shift work.

The ideal candidate will also have:

• 2-5 years of experience in a hospital-based laboratory setting.
• Experience and qualification in biochemistry or microbiology.
• Experience, knowledge, or qualification in immunology or molecular testing.
• New graduate with both biochemistry and microbiology placements may also be considered.

The successful candidate will be required to work in both Biochemistry and Microbiology, participating in a 24/7 roster, covering North Shore Hospital and Waitākere Hospital sites.
