Job summary

New Zealand Defence Force – Auckland, North Island is seeking an experienced Boating Instructor to design, deliver and evaluate small craft training for NZDF personnel. This hands-on role combines specialist boating instruction, course development, student mentoring and stakeholder engagement to ensure maritime training is delivered safely and to the highest standards.

New Zealand Defence Force – Auckland, North Island

As a Boating Instructor within the Royal New Zealand Navy, you will design, deliver and evaluate small craft training for NZDF personnel. This hands-on role combines specialist boating instruction, course development, student mentoring and stakeholder engagement to ensure maritime training is delivered safely and to the highest standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering NZDF small craft boating courses and practical training
  • Assessing student competency and providing coaching and ongoing support
  • Updating instructional materials to ensure it is up to date and conforms to all Maritime Regulatory authority standards
  • Maintaining accurate records, course documentation and risk management requirements

The salary for this role starts from $90,158 with a midpoint of $99,501, inclusive of a 4% superannuation contribution. Appointments within this range are based on skills and experience.

We're seeking an experienced boating professional who is passionate about developing others and maintaining high standards of maritime safety. You will bring strong instructional capability, sound judgement and the ability to build effective relationships while delivering training in a dynamic operational environment.

Our ideal candidate will have the following skills/qualifications:

  • Ability to handle power driven vessels, from tiller driven single propulsion to 24m twin propulsion vessels
  • Prior NZ Navy (or equivalent) boating experience (preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain solid working relationships across a wide range of people
  • Good computer skills with particular proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • SRL endorsed to 24m
  • A Certificate in Adult Learning Level 4 (or equivalent)

Low Level Security Clearance

  • You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
  • At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last five (5) years.
  • You must have a five (5) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
