Job summary

Eagle Recruitment NZ is seeking hardworking Boat Builders to join our team in New Zealand. You will construct, repair and maintain vessels using fiberglass, timber, composites, and steel, following designs and specifications.

Ideal candidates have a Level 4 NZ Certificate in Boat Building or 3 years of relevant experience, strong attention to detail, read blueprints, and work safely with hand and power tools.

Qualifications

  • Level 4 NZ Certificate in Boat Building or at least 3 years of related work experience.
  • Strong knowledge of boat-building materials and techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Excellent hand–eye coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to use a wide range of hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
  • Health and safety awareness in a marine environment.
  • NZ work eligibility (NZ Citizen/Resident or eligible).

Responsibilities

  • Construct vessels according to designs using fibreglass, timber, composites and steel.
  • Repair and modify existing vessels including structural work and hull care.
  • Install hull components, bulkheads, decks and fittings with precision.
  • Read technical drawings and ensure watertight integrity.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work area.
  • Collaborate with team and meet production timelines.
  • May assist with launching, hauling and vessel movement.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve construction or repair issues.

The successful candidates will be responsible for the construction, repair, and maintenance of high-quality vessels, working with a variety of materials and techniques. Responsibilities
  • Constructing new vessels according to design specifications and blueprints, utilising a range of materials including fibreglass, timber, composites, and steel.

  • Performing repairs and modifications to existing vessels, including structural repairs, osmosis treatment, gelcoat repairs, and system upgrades.

  • Installing and fitting out boat components such as bulkheads, stringers, decks, cabin structures, windows, doors, hatches, machine mountings, propeller supports, and rudders.

  • Installing mast frames, decking fittings, machine shafts, and safety equipment.

  • Working with various hand and power tools, ensuring their safe and effective operation.

  • Applying adhesives, sealants, and coatings to ensure watertight integrity and a high-quality finish.

  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings, plans, and specifications accurately.

  • Collaborating effectively with other team members.

  • Maintaining a clean and organised work environment, adhering to safety regulations and company procedures.

  • Ensuring all work is completed to a high standard of quality and within agreed timelines.

  • Potentially assisting with the launching, hauling, and movement of vessels.

  • Determining repair requirements and procedures.

  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving issues that may arise during the construction or repair process.

  • Keeping up-to-date with new materials, techniques, and industry best practices.

  • May make hull moulds and fabricate and repair vessels using materials such as aluminium, wood, glass, reinforced plastics, carbon fibre, Kevlar fibreglass, and concrete.

Requirements and Skills
  • Level 4 NZ Certificate in Boat Building, or at least three years of relevant work experience, such as a Boat Builder, Carpenter, Fibreglass or Composite work, and others.

  • Strong working knowledge of various boat-building materials and techniques.

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints.

  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.

  • Ability to use a wide range of hand and power tools safely and effectively.

  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality workmanship.

  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • A strong understanding of and commitment to health and safety regulations in a marine environment.

  • A full and clean driver's licence is preferred but not required.

  • Be willing to undergo random drug tests while employed.

  • Must be an NZ Citizen, NZ Resident, or eligible to work in NZ.

The successful applicants will have the opportunity to work in different locations (Northland, Auckland, and Bay of Plenty), providing a unique chance to explore New Zealand's diverse regions.

This is a full-time, permanent role, and the hourly pay rate ranges betweenNZ$28 and NZ$35, depending on experience and qualifications. The work hours are a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 70 hours per week, to be worked between Monday and Friday, between 7 am and 5 pm. They may be required to work on weekends.
