Job summary

AsureQuality is seeking a Biosecurity Field Officer for a casual, outdoor role in Hawke's Bay. You will join a small team to conduct surveillance, trapping, data recording, and sample handling at high‑risk sites such as seaports and airports.

Training is provided and hours vary up to 40 per week, all daylight hours. Successful candidates must be physically fit, flexible with hours, and capable of using mobile apps and computers.

Qualifications

  • Physically fit and able to walk for long periods.
  • Commit to work hours on short notice (1–7 days).
  • Able to use phone apps and computer technology.
  • Respect Te Reo me ona tikanga Maori and other cultures.
  • Can-do attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Biosecurity experience is desirable but not essential.
  • NZ driver license is desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver biosecurity surveillance and response field services for the NIAS programme.
  • Work in a small team to undertake site inspections, trapping and data handling at high‑risk sites.
  • Support other Biosecurity teams with Fruit Fly Surveillance if needed.
  • Respect mātauranga Māori and local tikanga in daily work.

Biosecurity Field Officer - Casual Position

Job Description

AsureQuality's Biosecurity team are looking to add one new team member to help deliver services thatprotect New Zealand against exotic pests and disease incursions.

Dates of work:

5 January 2027 to the end of March 2027 (approximately 2-3 months, weather dependent).

Mandatory Induction:

Successful candidates must be available to attend a one-day induction on either Tuesday 4 November 2026 or Wednesday 5 November 2026 (date to be confirmed).

Location:We will hold the training at our Laboratory in Lynfield, Auckland.

Meeting daily at our office in Hastings.

These casual roles will involve varying hours. This means the hours could be anything from 0 to 40 hours per week. Can only be worked during daylight hours, as these roles involve working outdoors.

In this role you will…

  • Deliver biosecurity surveillance & response field services for the National Invasive Ant Surveillance programme (NIAS).
  • Work in a team of 2to undertake site inspections, trapping/surveillance work, data recording and sample handling looking for exotic ants at high-risk sites such as seaports, airports & transitional facilities.
  • Potentially help out other Biosecurity teams with Fruit Fly Surveillance.
  • Respect mātauranga (understanding) Māori and local tikanga (culture) and encourage their practice in our roles
Qualifications

To be considered for this role you will…

  • Be physically fit and able to walk for long periods of time.
  • Able to commit to work hours at short notice (we often give 1-7 days notice for upcoming work hours, due to the nature of the work).
  • Able to use phone apps and computer technology.
  • Respect for Te Reo me ona tikanga Maori and other cultures.
  • Can-do attitude and a great work ethic.
  • Previous experience in Biosecurity is highly desirable but not essential.
  • A full, clean New Zealand drivers licence is desired but not essential.
