Job summary

Tawa Business Group in Wellington is seeking an experienced Automotive Technician with a clear path to management. This busy local workshop offers a hands-on role, with the long-term goal of taking over workshop leadership.

Fully qualified technicians (WoF AVI preferred) or journeymen with 2+ years, or near qualifying 3rd-year apprentices are welcome to apply. You’ll diagnose, service, and repair light vehicles, and grow with our team.

Qualifications

• NZ work eligibility: must reside in New Zealand with valid visa or residency.
• Trade qualified or journeyman with 2+ years experience, or near qualifying 3rd-year apprentice.
• Proficient in light vehicle diagnostics and mechanical repairs.
• Good communication, tidy appearance and professional attitude with suppliers/clients.
• Valid New Zealand driver's licence.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair modern light vehicles using scan tools.
• Carry out WoF inspections and tyre fitting (if qualified).
• Book in vehicles, quote repairs, order parts, and liaise with customers.
• Assist with future leadership and workshop workflow.

About the Role

Are you an experienced mechanic looking for a clear path to step into management? We are a busy, well-equipped local workshop looking for a skilled Automotive Technician to join our close-knit team. This is a varied, hands‑on role with a huge twist: we are looking for a capable all‑rounder who wants to learn the ins and outs of our business, with the long‑term goal of taking over the management of the workshop and staff. Whether you are a fully qualified technician (preferably with a WoF AVI), a journeyman with 2+ years of experience, or a 3rd-year apprentice close to qualifying, we want to hear from you.

What You’ll Be Doing

• General Servicing & Repairs: Diagnosing and repairing modern light vehicles (cars, vans, and SUVs) using modern scan tools.
• WoF & Tyres: Carrying out Warrant of Fitness inspections (if qualified) and handling tyre fitting and wheel alignments (W/A). Full tyre training provided if needed!
• Customer & Supplier Relations: Booking in vehicles, quoting repairs, ordering parts, and chatting directly with our loyal customers.
• Future Leadership: Learning the business operations to eventually oversee workshop workflow and lead the team.

What You’ll Bring

• Work Eligibility: Must currently reside in New Zealand and hold a valid work visa or residency.
• Trade Experience: Trade qualified (highly preferred), a journeyman with 2+ years' trade experience, or a near‑complete 3rd-year apprentice.
• Technical Skills: Confident with light vehicle diagnostics, mechanical repairs, and basic computer systems.
• Customer Focus: Excellent communication skills, a tidy appearance, and a professional attitude when dealing with suppliers and clients.
• Reliability: A strong work ethic, honesty, and great organizational skills.
• Licence: A clean, valid New Zealand driver's licence.
