Job summary

Fluid Recruitment seeks a Controls & Automation Lead to own automation functions in Hawke's Bay. This hands-on role leads projects from scoping to delivery, including programming, commissioning and on-site support, while staying technically involved.

You will work across diverse industrial environments, mentoring a small team and driving improvements in systems and processes. Excellent communication with clients is essential.

Qualifications

• 5+ years across electrical, controls and/or industrial automation.
• Strong PLC programming, HMI design and SCADA exposure; water sector ideal.
• Experience with RSLogix 500/5000 and/or ISAGRAF highly regarded.
• Confident in reading electrical drawings; AutoCAD Electrical is advantageous.
• Experience with project scoping, estimating and delivery; fault-finding.

Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver industrial automation and controls projects.
• Program PLCs/RTUs, upgrade systems, fault-find on site.
• Design and document electrical/instrumentation drawings.
• Read and develop electrical schematics; estimate scope and timeline.
• Coordinate end-to-end project delivery; mentor a small technical team.
• Engage with clients and provide technical support.

We're working with an established New Zealand electrical and engineering business with a strong reputation across the industrial and commercial sectors. Due to continued growth, they're looking for an experienced Controls & Automation Lead to take ownership of their automation and engineering function.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role, offering the opportunity to lead projects from initial scoping and estimation through to programming, commissioning and delivery, while continuing to stay involved technically.

You'll work across a diverse range of industrial environments, including infrastructure, water and wastewater, food processing and manufacturing.

The role will involve:

• Leading and delivering industrial automation and controls projects


• PLC and RTU programming, upgrades and fault finding


• Electrical and instrumentation design and documentation


• Reading and developing electrical drawings and schematics


• Project scoping, estimating and end-to-end delivery


• Commissioning and troubleshooting systems on site


• Working directly with clients and providing technical support


• Leading and mentoring a small technical team


• Identifying opportunities to improve systems, processes and project delivery

What we're looking for:

• 5+ years' experience across electrical, controls and/or industrial automation


• Strong PLC programming, HMI design and SCADA development exposure - ideally within the water sector


• Experience with RSLogix 500/5000 and/or ISAGRAF would be highly regarded


• Confident interpreting electrical drawings and schematics and AutoCAD Electrical design experience is advantageous


• Experience with project scoping, estimating and delivery


• Strong fault-finding and commissioning capability


• Strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships with clients and internal teams

You'll have the autonomy to make decisions, influence how projects are delivered and play a key role in the continued development of the automation function.
