Job description

Support advice and numerical analysis to internal and external customersWork with the specialised transmission pricing systemJoin a supportive team with stimulating, meaningful workAs New Zealand's only transmission company, Transpower's role as a State-Owned Enterprise is to build, operate, and maintain the National Grid. At the heart of the electricity sector, we have a unique and critical role, including helping to enable and accelerate a net carbon zero future.Transpower sets its annual transmission charges each year in accordance with the Transmission Pricing Methodology (TPM), which is a schedule of the Electricity Industry Participation Code and is governed by the Electricity Authority. Because our transmission network is a natural monopoly, our investments in grid assets and allowable revenue are regulated by the Commerce Commission.About the teamAs the demand for electricity continues to grow to meet climate change and sustainability goals, so too does the demand for the critical infrastructure and Transmission services to enable this change. The Pricing team is a small, supportive group of experts who operate and administer the grid pricing function that determines how Transpower's costs as owner and operator of the Grid (~$1B pa) are recovered from our direct customers. The team must equally consider the interests of all our customers. This places a heavy reliance on consistency and precedent (as opposed to unregulated pricing that is much more flexible). The team is an internal gatekeeper for ensuring Transpower is kept whole (as a cost recovery business), and pricing outcomes are consistent with the guiderails of regulation.Ultimately, our work supports Transpower to be a successful and commercially orientated business that works with the best long-term interests of New Zealand. The opportunityBased in our Waikoukou, Wellington Head Office, this is a chance to start building specialist knowledge in a supportive team doing work that matters for New Zealands electricity system. You do not need to arrive with deep electricity sector or pricing experience - we will help you learn. What you will bring is curiosity, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in understanding how things work. You will start by providing analytical, administrative, and coordination support while learning how transmission pricing works in practice. You will learn how to contribute to:calculating annual transmission charges to a high standard, with minimal auditor-identified errors or changes.high-quality analysis, aimed at understanding the why behind the numbers, including following your intuition to explore and explain any anomalies.the development of Transpowers interpretation and understanding of its regulated pricing obligations, risks, opportunities, and incentivesdeveloping and operating high standard commercial investment models or calculations for internal consumption that are easy to follow.helping foster a better understanding of what "good" looks like in a commercial and regulatory context throughout the business. What will you bringWe are looking for someone at graduate or first-role level who brings energy, curiosity, strong attention to detail, and a quick-learning mindset. You may have studied economics, finance, engineering, mathematics, data analytics, commerce, law, or another numerate or analytical discipline.
