Job summary

Sacred Heart Cathedral School in Wellington is seeking an energetic Assistant Programme Manager to support the sKids after-school programme. You will help children settle in, assist with homework, and create a safe, inclusive, and fun learning environment.

As 2IC, you will lead sessions when the Programme Manager is away, supervise groups, and build positive relationships with staff, parents, and caregivers. Additional hours may be available during school holiday programmes.

Qualifications

• Experience working with groups of children in OSCAR, childcare, teaching, camps or similar.
• Ability to step into a leadership role as 2IC when required.
• Strong communication with children, parents and school staff.

Responsibilities

• Support the Programme Manager in day-to-day running of the sKids programme.
• Act as 2IC, leading sessions when the Programme Manager is away.
• Build positive relationships with school staff and families.
• Assist children with homework and learning activities.
• Supervise groups, ensuring a safe, inclusive and enjoyable programme.
• Plan and deliver structured activities including arts, sports, games and events.
• Support children to develop confidence, resilience and social skills.
• Use positive behaviour guidance strategies to maintain a respectful culture.
• Mentor Programme Assistants on shift.
• Communicate with parents and caregivers professionally.
• Set up, prepare resources and pack down sessions.

Job description

We're looking for an enthusiastic and capable Assistant Programme Manager to join our team at Sacred Heart Cathedral School, a vibrant inner-city Catholic school with a proud tradition of high academic standards and a strong sense of community. This role is ideal for someone who genuinely enjoys working with children and can balance learning support with fun, engaging activities. You'll play an important part in helping children settle into the after-school environment, supporting homework completion and creating an atmosphere where children feel safe, included, and excited to participate. You'll be working a minimum of 10 hours per week , rostered Monday to Friday .

Shift Times:

After School Care : 2:10pm - 5:30pm (availability from 2:10pm is essential)

Additional hours may be available during our School Holiday Programmes operating between 7:30am and 6:00pm.

Here's what you'll be up to

• Support the Programme Manager in the day-to-day running of the sKids programme, helping ensure smooth, safe, and well-organised operations.
• Act as the programme's Second-in-Charge (2IC), confidently leading sessions when the Programme Manager is away.
• Build positive relationships with Sacred Heart Cathedral School staff and support the school's commitment to high academic achievement.
• Assist children with homework and learning activities, helping create a positive and encouraging environment for academic success.
• Supervise and engage groups of children, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable programme for all participants.
• Plan and deliver a range of structured activities including arts and crafts, sports, games, challenges, and special events.
• Support children to develop confidence, resilience, and positive social skills through meaningful participation and play.
• Use positive behaviour guidance strategies to manage challenging situations and maintain a respectful programme culture.
• Support and mentor Programme Assistants on shift, helping activities run smoothly and expectations are consistently met.
• Build strong relationships with parents, caregivers, and school staff through friendly and professional communication.
• Assist with programme set-up, resource preparation, and pack-down to ensure sessions run seamlessly.

• Have experience working with groups of children, such as OSCAR programmes, childcare, coaching, teaching, camps, youth work, or similar.
