Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in asset management or related domain.

  • Experience analysing asset performance, condition, and risk.
  • Experience developing and optimising maintenance strategies.

This position sits within the Growth and Delivery Group within IAWAIThe purpose of the group is strategic planning, enabling and managing growth, delivering new assets, and optimising quality assets and infrastructure for current and future generations.

Job Description

Reporting to the Head of Activity Management, the Asset Optimisation Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing asset optimisation practices that improve asset performance, support informed decision-making, and extend asset life whilst balancing risk, cost, and levels of service.

Some key outcomes of this role include:

  • Analyse operational, maintenance, condition, and renewal data to identify performance trends, risks, failure patterns, utilisation issues, and optimisation opportunities
  • Provide evidence-based recommendations and modelling to improve asset reliability, resilience, service outcomes, lifecycle value, and maintenance or renewal investment decisions
  • Assess asset age, condition, performance, and risk to validate lifecycle assumptions, determine remaining useful life, and inform renewal forecasting, capital planning, and risk management
  • Monitor asset outcomes and test actual operational performance against the Maintenance Strategy, Asset Management Plans, and Asset Strategies—recommending improvements to future interventions and investment
  • Audit and improve condition assessment programmes to ensure consistent, accurate, standards-aligned information supports risk-based decisions
  • Own and continuously improve the Maintenance Strategy, optimising preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance against asset criticality, condition, risk, service needs, and whole-of-life cost
  • Support maintenance planning and partner with operations and maintenance teams to prioritise and deliver effective work programmes using performance, condition, and optimisation insights
  • Maintain high-quality asset data and reporting frameworks, improving data capture and using evidence to drive continuous improvement and customer outcome.

Qualifications

  • A proven track record of thinking differently, acting with integrity, working collaboratively, and influencing outcomes through strong relationships rather than formal authority
  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Asset Management, Infrastructure Management, or a related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in asset management, maintenance optimisation, reliability engineering, infrastructure planning, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of asset management principles, including ISO 55001 frameworks and lifecycle management practices
  • Demonstrated experience analysing asset performance, condition, risk, and maintenance data
  • Experience developing and optimising maintenance strategies and programmes
  • Knowledge of predictive, preventative, and risk-based maintenance methodologies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability with the ability to translate data into practical recommendations
  • Experience with enterprise asset management systems and asset information platforms
  • Excellent written, verbal, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver outcomes in a complex environment
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation
  • Experience within local government, water infrastructure, transport, or other utility environments is desirable but not essential
