Fulton Hogan is seeking an Asphalt Laboratory Technician in Otago to split time between our Alexandra lab and mobile asphalt plants. You will perform laboratory and field testing, ensuring asphalt mixes meet specifications and quality standards, with real-time feedback to crews.

We’re looking for an Asphalt Laboratory Technician to join our Laboratory team in Alexandra, Otago. You’ll carry out laboratory and field testing of asphalt and materials, and provide real‑time quality assurance at mobile asphalt plants, helping us deliver safe, high-quality, and reliable infrastructure outcomes.
This is a hands‑on role working across both a laboratory and mobile, site‑based environment. You’ll split your time between controlled lab testing and outdoor field work at asphalt plants and paving sites, collaborating closely with crews and operators. Your work plays a critical role in ensuring asphalt mixes meet specification, supporting safe, consistent, and high‑quality project delivery. It’s a practical, varied position where your testing and real‑time feedback directly influence performance and outcomes on the ground.
Perform laboratory testing on asphalt, aggregates, and construction materials in line with approved standards
Collect, prepare, and test asphalt samples from plant and paving operations in both lab and mobile environments
Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory and mobile testing equipment to ensure accurate results
Monitor material compliance (e.g. temperature, grading, binder content) and deliver timely, reliable reporting
Collaborate with plant operators and site crews to troubleshoot issues and provide real‑time quality feedback
Maintain accurate records, documentation, and traceability of all testing activities
Experience in laboratory or field-based materials testing (asphalt or aggregates highly regarded)
Understanding of, or exposure to, testing standards such as IANZ and ISO17025
Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately record and report results
A current driver’s licence and willingness to work across laboratory and site environments
Good communication skills to work effectively with plant operators, crews, and stakeholders
A practical, hands‑on approach with a strong commitment to safety and quality
Motivation to learn, develop technical skills, and contribute as part of a team
