Job summary

Auckland City Mission – Te Tāpui Atawhai is seeking a Casual AOD Practitioner for the Ringa Riwha role to support residents facing mental health challenges and AOD concerns in a permanent residential setting. The position blends clinical work with service development and is designed as a pathway into a longer-term career within the Mission.

Qualifications

• Level 7 or higher qualification in a relevant health or social services discipline.
• Capacity to demonstrate Te Tiriti o Waitangi values and Mission values in practice.
• NZ Driver’s Licence is required (or current).

Responsibilities

• Provide a safe, supportive environment for clients managing withdrawal from alcohol and drugs, including those with co‑existing mental health issues.
• Assist with intake and withdrawal assessments, care planning, mental health and risk assessments, and psychosocial goal setting.
• Work with clients pre‑ and post‑detox, ensuring wraparound support that enhances recovery and stability.
• Conduct individual and group sessions, offering therapeutic interventions tailored to client strengths and needs.
• Work closely with the Team Leader and Senior Practitioners to build capability within the team.

About The Role

The AOD Practitioner – Ringa Riwha plays a pivotal role within the He Ara Whakamana Tangata team, supporting residents living with, or at risk of, mental health challenges and problematic alcohol and other drug (AOD) use in a permanent residential setting. This role combines clinical expertise with service development to ensure the delivery of responsive, evidence-based, and culturally grounded care.We value learning and growth. What You Will Be Doing

What We Are Looking For

• Level 7 or higher qualification in a relevant health or social services discipline, DAPAANZ registration is preferred but not essential.
• Capacity to demonstrate through actions commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Mission’s values of Manaakitanga, Atawhai, Rangapū and Mana Tika, Mana Ōrite.
• Experience working in health, social services, or community‑based organisations, ideally within the not‑for‑profit sector.
• Knowledgeable, passionate, and patient, with the ability to teach and support others with empathy and aroha.
• A current Full New Zealand Driver’s Licence.
