Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is seeking an Analyst Spatial Intelligence to join our National team. You will apply GIS and spatial analysis to support forestry, ETS, and broader primary industries, develop spatial workflows, and provide policy advice and data analysis.

Qualifications

  • Graduate or intermediate GIS analyst with a couple of years' experience using ESRI ArcGIS Pro.
  • Experience with Python, R, SQL, and/or FME.
  • Ability to map and analyse forestry and/or ETS for forestry.

Responsibilities

  • Apply GIS and spatial analysis to support forestry and wider primary industries.
  • Understand and apply relevant legislation, policy, and regulations.
  • Assess ETS applications and estimate timeframes.
  • Contribute to development of innovative technical solutions (scripting, automation, and web tools).
  • Produce high-quality maps, reports, and analyses with independent initiative and critical thinking.
  • Maintain and use GIS datasets to support spatial intelligence.
  • Continuously improve processes and tools.
  • Peer review spatial products and methods.
  • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Analyst Spatial Intelligence

Role type: Permanent, Full-time

Location: National

Salary band & range: General Salary Range Band F: $77,992 to $90,999 depending on skills and experience

About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

Join our focused Spatial Intelligence team to provide spatial data analysis to inform on a range of organisational delivery decisions. You will undertake imagery analysis, assist in developing spatial workflows, and provide sound advice to programmes including the Emissions Trading Scheme for forestry, land use, forestry investments, biosecurity readiness and response, and fisheries. You will also get the chance to be involved in new spatial initiatives across the Ministry for which you will bring your experience with GIS.

The role will be focused on supporting the ETS for forestry through conducting land eligibility assessments, peer reviews, workflow development, policy advice, and data analysis.

Core responsibilities for the role:
  • Apply GIS and spatial analysis to support forestry and wider primary industries.
  • Understand and apply relevant legislation, policy, and regulations.
  • Assess ETS applications and estimate timeframes.

This role can be based in Tauranga, Wellington, Gisborne or Rotorua.

About You - Mōu

This role would best suit a graduate or an intermediate GIS analyst with a couple of years' experience using the ESRI software suite including ArcGIS Pro.

  • Apply your existing geospatial methods to map and analyse forestry and/or the ETS for forestry.
  • Demonstrate advanced analytical skills in reviewing, recording and synthesising information from numerous sources to inform decision making.
  • Have experience with Python, R, SQL, and/or FME.
  • Interpret aerial and ground photography and multi-spectral satellite imagery.
  • Identify and communicate risks, issues, and options and potential solutions.
  • Carry out independent thinking and decision making using prescribed frameworks and rulesets.
  • Effectively translate business requirements into meaningful outcomes.
