Job summary

MBIE is seeking an Advisor, Entity Performance in Wellington to support governance and performance monitoring across Crown entities. You will analyse data, advise on performance and investments, and help manage the accountability cycle while building strong relationships with MBIE teams and monitored entities.

The role focuses on ensuring entities are well governed, financially sustainable, and aligned with government outcomes, with opportunities to influence policy and strategic direction.

Qualifications

  • Must have strong commercial and financial literacy.
  • Experience analyzing factors affecting organisational performance.
  • Ability to interpret complex policy, performance, financial information and write clearly.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to quality, accuracy and detail.
  • Experience using data analytics and drawing insights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with a strong customer focus.
  • Understanding of public policy processes and NZ public sector environment.
  • Ability to build credible working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

About the Role

Tēnei tūranga: As an Advisor, you will support MBIE's system of Crown entity performance monitoring and governance support. Working closely with Principal and Senior Advisors you will analyse a range of data including performance reporting, accountability documents and support the development of authoritative advice and oversight on organisational performance, financial management, strategic direction, governance performance, capability, investment cases and risks and opportunities. You will build constructive relationships between MBIE and a portfolio of Crown entities, connecting policy, ownership, funding, and delivery perspectives, and will work with senior leaders to set and monitor strategic outcomes and performance indicators.

Strengthen the performance and governance of Crown entitiesMBIE partners with a diverse range of Crown entities to deliver on the Government's goals and objectives. These include: Regulators such as the Electricity Authority, WorkSafe New Zealand, the Commerce Commission and the Financial Markets Authority Delivery agencies such as New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, Tourism New Zealand, Invest New Zealand Crown companies such as the New Zealand Institute of Advanced Technology, Bioeconomy Science Institute, Earth Sciences New Zealand, as well as New Zealand Growth Capital Partners The Accident Compensation Corporation MBIE's Entity Performance branch currently has an active work programme spanning merger activity, entity disestablishment, major business cases, investigations and reviews. The branch will also monitor the Accident Compensation Corporation from 1 December. MBIE is seeking an Advisor, Entity Performance to work with Principal and Senior Advisors to analyse and advise on the performance of Crown entities. You will support the annual accountability cycle, help assess financial and non-financial performance, contribute to advice on entity proposals and investments, and build effective relationships across MBIE and with monitored entities.

Skills and Experience Required
  • Commercial acumen and strong financial literacy.
  • Experience analysing factors that affect organisational performance; financial or commercial experience is desirable
  • The ability to interpret complex policy, performance, financial, or commercial information and write clearly and concisely.
  • Sound problem-identification, research, and analytical skills, with attention to quality, accuracy, and detail.
  • Understanding of data systems and frameworks, and experience using data analytics and insights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong customer focus and commitment to professional service.
  • An understanding of public policy processes, stakeholder consultation, and the New Zealand public sector environment.
  • The ability to build credible working relationships with colleagues, entity staff, and external stakeholders.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification is required, preferably in economics, finance, law, commerce, science or public policy.
