Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

Are you an experienced retail professional ready to take the next step in your management career?

Outside Sports is looking for an enthusiastic, capable and commercially minded Retail 2IC to join our Te Anau team.

This is a genuine second-in-command management position, working closely with the Store Manager and General Manager to manage and grow our Te Anau operation.

We are looking for someone who can lead people, drive sales, make sound operational decisions and deliver an exceptional customer experience — while also having a genuine passion for the outdoors.

ABOUT OUTSIDE SPORTS

Outside Sports is one of New Zealand's leading independent outdoor retailers, specialising in outdoor adventure, technical apparel, footwear, camping, hiking, snow sports, cycling and related equipment.

Our Te Anau store services a unique market of local customers as well as visitors travelling through Fiordland and visiting some of New Zealand's most spectacular outdoor destinations.

The Te Anau operation is also becoming increasingly important to our growing e-commerce business, with online orders being picked, packed and dispatched from the store.

This means this is an exciting time to join the business. The role will continue to evolve as our retail, e‑commerce and stockholding operations grow.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As Retail 2IC, you will be a key member of the Te Anau management team.

Working alongside the Store Manager, you will have delegated responsibility for important areas of the business, including:

  • Daily store operations and operational standards
  • Sales performance and achievement of store targets
  • Staff procurement, leadership, coaching and development
  • Customer service and customer experience
  • Maintaining relationships with suppliers, determining product mix
  • Inventory and stock management
  • E-commerce fulfilment and operations
  • Tracking budgets and store targets
  • Verify orders, invoices & credit notes accurately
  • Creation of promotional marketing for the store
  • Hiking rental operations
  • Shopify POS and store systems
  • Health, safety and loss prevention
  • Daily cash, audits and operational procedures

You will be expected to take ownership, make decisions and solve problems rather than simply wait for direction.

The successful candidate will become a trusted member of the management team and will have a real opportunity to influence the continued growth and development of the Te Anau business.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the Team
  • Lead and motivate the retail team on a daily basis.
  • Allocate staff and resources according to customer demand and business priorities.
  • Coach team members in sales, product knowledge and customer service.
  • Champion recruitment, onboarding and training.
  • Provide regular feedback and contribute to staff performance management.
  • Maintain a positive, professional and accountable team culture.
  • Work to achieve and exceed sales targets.
  • Monitor daily sales performance and communicate priorities to the team.
  • Identify opportunities to increase sales, conversion and average transaction value.
  • Coach staff in effective selling and customer engagement.
  • Provide feedback to General Manager on customer trends, product performance and local market opportunities.
Manage Store Operations
  • Ensure the store operates efficiently and professionally every day.
  • Coordinate opening and closing procedures, cash handling and daily operational requirements.
  • Ensure company policies and procedures are followed.
  • Maintain high standards of presentation, cleanliness, security and health and safety.
  • Make operational decisions within your delegated authority.
  • Resolve customer and operational issues promptly and professionally.
  • Maintain accurate inventory using Cin7 Omni.
  • Monitor stock levels and coordinate replenishment.
  • Assist with receiving, transfers, stock counts and inventory accuracy.
  • Identify stock discrepancies and work to resolve them.
  • Provide feedback to our Business Buyers on product demand, stock levels and customer requirements.
  • Maintain excellent visual merchandising and product presentation.
Manage Transaction & Credit Records
  • Process customer exchanges and credits accurately in Cin7.
  • Verify orders, invoices, returned products, quantities and prices.
  • Complete credit notes, refunds, exchanges and stock adjustments.
  • Update order and fulfilment statuses in both systems as required.
  • Ensure all transactions are accurate, authorized and properly recorded
Support Our Growing E-Commerce Business

Our e-commerce business is growing rapidly, and Te Anau is becoming an increasingly important fulfilment location.

You will:

  • Coordinate and oversee e-commerce picking and packing.
  • Allocate staff resources to fulfil online orders.
  • Ensure orders are picked accurately and efficiently.
  • Ensure products are checked and securely packed.
  • Coordinate dispatch and courier collection.
  • Assist with returns and inventory maintenance.
  • Work closely with our E-Commerce Manager to improve fulfilment efficiency and customer service.
Hiking Rental
  • You will also oversee the day-to-day operation of our hiking rental business, including:
  • Reservations and customer collections.
  • Equipment returns and condition checks.
  • Equipment cleaning and preparation.
  • Staff training and customer safety briefings.
  • Maintaining high standards of customer service and equipment presentation.
ABOUT YOU
  • We are looking for someone who is:
  • An experienced retail professional with previous leadership or management experience.
  • Commercially minded and motivated by achieving sales results.
  • Confident leading and developing a team.
  • Comfortable making decisions and taking responsibility.
  • Highly organised and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Customer focused with excellent communication skills.
  • Passionate about outdoor activities and technical outdoor products.
  • Comfortable working with POS, inventory and other business systems.
  • Physically capable of handling stock and cartons when required.
  • Flexible and available to work weekends, evenings and public holidays as required.
  • Professional, positive and reliable.
  • High computer literacy, confident in a wide range of design and data driven software
  • Experience in outdoor retail, sporting goods, tourism or another specialist retail environment would be highly regarded.
WHY JOIN OUTSIDE SPORTS?

This is an opportunity to join a growing, successful outdoor retail business and play an important role in the next stage of our Te Anau operation.

You will work with some of the world's leading outdoor brands and have the opportunity to develop your retail management skills across sales, people leadership, inventory, e-commerce and store operations.

Most importantly, you will be part of a team that genuinely loves the outdoors and helping customers get out there.
