Job summary

Yorktown Systems Group is seeking a qualified Wargaming Analyst to support NATO’s Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger, Norway. The role focuses on planning, executing and analyzing professional wargames, contributing to doctrine development and readiness.

The candidate will lead data collection, analysis, and reporting activities, coordinating with the Wargaming Branch to ensure objectives are met and sponsor requirements are satisfied. Security clearance is required.

Qualifications

• Three years working in multidisciplinary team planning, coordinating, designing and analysing training/analytical events.
• Active NATO Secret Security Clearance or national equivalent.
• Familiarity with national or NATO military doctrine, policy, processes, arrangements and procedures.
• Proficient in MS Office software: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher and SharePoint.
• Demonstrated proficiency in English as defined in STANAG 6001 (SLP 4444).

Responsibilities

• Provide subject matter expertise and operational support in wargaming analysis of JWC strategic- and operational-level wargames tailored to sponsor requirements.
• Support the planning and execution of wargames including developing requirements, aims and data collection plans.
• Write the Data Collection and Analysis Plan (DCAP) and identify data streams and survey questions.
• Lead or support the wargame analysis process from development through post-conduct, including objective assessment and reporting.
• Lead writer/producer of the wargame reports in accordance with SOPs.
• Support sponsor and training audience with internal analysis and assessment.
• Contribute to Wargaming Branch conceptual refinement and innovation.

Summary:
Yorktown Systems Group is seeking a qualified Wargaming Analyst to support NATO’s Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) in Stavanger, Norway. The JWC serves as NATO’s premier warfare development and training centre, enabling transformation through the design, development, delivery, and analysis of exercises, experiments, and wargames at the operational and strategic levels. The JWC supports the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT) and Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) by developing NATO’s cognitive and operational readiness through a comprehensive and integrated training, experimentation, and analysis framework.

The JWC Wargaming Branch (WGB), within the Enablement Division, Operations Directorate, is responsible for the coordination, planning, design, execution, and analysis of professional military wargames and other training events. These wargames are bespoke, analytical or educational in nature, and are tailored to support NATO warfare development priorities, concept testing, decision-making, and the training of military leaders.

The Wargaming Branch (WGB) delivers NATO’s leading-edge professional wargaming capability and functions as the central hub for the Alliance’s wargaming development and integration. It supports NATO’s Warfare Development Agenda by designing and conducting analytical and educational wargames that explore complex problems, test new concepts, and assess decision-making processes in realistic, data-driven scenarios.

The WGB’s multidisciplinary team provides an end-to-end capability from initial concept and game mechanics to execution and analytical reporting. Wargames produced by the WGB inform operational design, concept experimentation, and doctrine development, complementing JWC’s broader mission to enhance NATO’s readiness and interoperability.

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Provide subject matter expertise and operational support in wargaming analysis of JWC strategic- and operational-level wargames tailored to the target audience. Wargames may be developed in conjunction with existing JWC Exercise Program of Work or as separate, stand‑alone training or analytical activities. The primary focus of the Wargaming Analyst is on the suitability and effectiveness of the JWC-developed wargame as a vehicle to meet the requirements of the sponsor(s), rather than specifically on the assessment of the outcome(s) for the target audience.
• Support the planning and execution of wargames through the following representative activities:
  • Develop an understanding of the requirements, aims, objectives and other special considerations from the wargame sponsor(s).
  • Develop research questions that support assessment of the wargame objectives.
  • Provide input to game design to ensure opportunities to reach those objectives and collect relevant data.
  • Participate in required in-progress reviews, conferences, and test-play.
• Write the Data Collection and Analysis Plan (DCAP) to prepare for and enable the wargame analysis process. This will include, at a minimum, the following:
  • Identify data streams and collection process for data to be collected during game development and play.
  • Create survey questions.
• Lead (or support) the wargame analysis process during development, conduct (execution) and post-conduct of a wargame including assessment of target audience accomplishment of objectives, as well as feedback and observations for the improvement of JWC and NATO wargaming. This will include, at a minimum, the following:
  • Lead the data collection process.
  • Train analysis team members (data collectors, postgame data analysts).
• Lead writer/producer of the wargame reports in accordance with the JWC Wargaming Process Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), to include inputs for hot wash ups (HWU), after action reviews (AAR), final wargame reports and/or wargame analysis reports.
• Support the sponsor (and/or training audience) with respect to their own internal analysis and assessment, taking advantage of synergy with JWC wargaming requirements and processes.
• Contribute to JWC Wargaming Branch conceptual refinement and innovation with subject‑matter‑area expertise.

Required Qualifications

• Three years working in multidisciplinary team planning, coordinating, designing and analysing training/analytical events (e.g. wargames, tabletop exercises, experiments, exercises).Current NATO Secret Security Clearance or National equivalent.
• Military service with NATO Rank / Grade of OF-3 or above on departure from active duty OR Civil Service civilian equivalent or a Bachelor’s or other Advanced degree in a relevant subject area.
• Familiarity with national or NATO military doctrine, policy, processes, arrangements and procedures.
• Competent in MS Office software: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher and SharePoint.
• Demonstrated proficiency in English as defined in STANAG 6001 (Standardized Linguistic Profile (SLP) 4444 – Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) or equivalent.

Clearance: Must possess an active NATO or U.S. SECRET or higher security clearance.
