Job summary

Hydro is seeking a VP Electrolysis Technology to lead electrolysis and materials technology initiatives from the Corporate Technology Office. You will translate research outcomes into operational improvements and influence Hydro’s technology strategy across the organization.

Ideal candidates bring 10+ years in aluminium electrolysis, a strategic mindset, and strong stakeholder management. Fluency in English and Norwegian is required to interact with global partners and internal teams.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years' experience in aluminium electrolysis and material technology.
  • Corporate and strategic mindset with strong stakeholder skills.
  • Self-driven, structured, and capable of leading complex initiatives.
  • Proficiency in English and Norwegian.
  • PhD-level or equivalent expertise in engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Work with R&D projects in electrolysis and material technology.
  • Advise on applying technological developments in operations across smelters.
  • Contribute to Hydro’s upstream technology strategy.
  • Coordinate research activities between Business Areas for knowledge transfer.
  • Conduct technology watch in electrolysis and materials; share insights with ELT.
  • Represent Hydro externally via talks and industry presence.
  • Leverage academic networks to strengthen Hydro’s capabilities.

Job description

We are now looking to hire a VP Electrolysis Technology in Hydro’s Corporate Technology Office (CTO).

CTO is responsible for supporting the Hydro organization in successfully developing relevant technology and technological competence targeted at securing Hydro’s technological leadership and competitive position within operations and products.

In this position, you will oversee electrolysis technology development, support R&D efforts, and contribute directly to Hydro’s technology strategy. The role will ensure that research outcomes are translated into operational improvements, to maintain Hydro’s technological leadership within electrolysis and materials.

What you will be doing

  • Coordinate research activities between Business Areas to ensure knowledge transfer and strategic alignment
  • Conduct technology watch in electrolysis and materials; communicate insights to ELT and Business Areas
  • Represent Hydro externally, giving talks and maintaining scientific and industry presence
  • Use and expand extensive academic and research networks to strengthen Hydro’s upstream capabilities.
What will make you successful?
  • 10+ years' experience from aluminium electrolysis and material technology is required, demonstrating strong analytical and strategic capabilities
  • A corporate and strategic mindset and excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to build and maintain effective networks across Business Areas and external partners.
  • Self-driven and structured, with the ability to identify opportunities, lead complex initiatives and deliver results with a high degree of independence.
  • Working proficiency in both English and Norwegian
  • Degree or experience at PhD-level in Engineering, e.g. Electrolysis, Materials Science, Metallurgy, or related fields
