Job summary

Hydro is seeking a VP Electrolysis Technology to lead and shape electrolysis technology development within the Corporate Technology Office. You will oversee R&D initiatives and translate research into operational improvements, ensuring Hydro maintains technological leadership in electrolysis and materials.

You will engage across Business Areas and external partners to drive collaboration, update technology strategy, and strengthen Hydro's upstream capabilities on an international scale.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years' experience in aluminium electrolysis and material technology.
  • Corporate/strategic mindset with strong stakeholder management.
  • Self-driven, structured, and capable of leading complex initiatives.
  • Fluency in English and Norwegian.
  • PhD-level degree in Engineering or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee electrolysis technology development and R&D activities.
  • Advise on applying tech developments in operations across smelters.
  • Contribute to updating Hydro's technology strategy for upstream tech.
  • Coordinate research activities between Business Areas for knowledge transfer.
  • Conduct technology watch in electrolysis and materials; report to ELT and Business Areas.
  • Represent Hydro externally with talks and maintain industry presence.
  • Leverage academic and research networks to strengthen upstream capabilities.

Job description

We are now looking to hire a VP Electrolysis Technology in Hydro's Corporate Technology Office (CTO).

CTO is responsible for supporting the Hydro organization in successfully developing relevant technology and technological competence targeted at securing Hydro's technological leadership and competitive position within operations and products.

In this position, you will oversee electrolysis technology development, support R&D efforts, and contribute directly to Hydro's technology strategy. The role will ensure that research outcomes are translated into operational improvements, to maintain Hydro's technological leadership within electrolysis and materials.

What you will be doing

Work with R&D projects and activities in electrolysis and material technology

Coordinate research activities between Business Areas to ensure knowledge transfer and strategic alignment

Conduct technology watch in electrolysis and materials; communicate insights to ELT and Business Areas

Represent Hydro externally, giving talks and maintaining scientific and industry presence

Use and expand extensive academic and research networks to strengthen Hydro's upstream capabilities.

What will make you successful?

10+ years' experience from aluminium electrolysis and material technology is required, demonstrating strong analytical and strategic capabilities

A corporate and strategic mindset and excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to build and maintain effective networks across Business Areas and external partners.

Self‑driven and structured, with the ability to identify opportunities, lead complex initiatives and deliver results with a high degree of independence.

Working proficiency in both English and Norwegian

Degree or experience at PhD‑level in Engineering, e.g. Electrolysis, Materials Science, Metallurgy, or related fields
