Job description

We're looking for a UX Designer who is obsessed with one question: what does it actually take to help a chess player get better, and how do we know when we've done it?

About Take Take

Co‑co‑founded by 5x World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, Take Take is building a new home for modern chess. An AI‑powered platform for casual players that provides personalized coaching, lets them play chess, and lets them share their learning journey with friends.

We already have a significant presence in the chess world, reaching 5 million people every month through our content. We just launched our new product and are incredibly excited about the future. Take Take is backed by SNÖ, Coatue, Lovable, Patrick Collison and others. We’re a small team in Oslo and London, on a journey to give 600 million chess players a new home.

The Role

This role exists because building the world’s best chess‑improvement platform starts with deeply understanding the people you’re building for. You’ll work alongside some of the best chess coaches and players in the world to truly understand what it takes to get better at chess — what makes players come back, what makes them give up, and what a genuine breakthrough in their game actually feels like. Then you’ll design for that, measure it, and keep improving it.

You’re not just designing screens; you’re building the understanding that tells us whether we’re actually building the right thing. You’ll work closely with the CPO and our AI team, and you’ll be the person in the room asking "but how do we know this is working?"

What You’ll Do
  • Define what it means for a chess player to get better on Take Take and design the experience around that goal from the ground up.
  • Run ongoing research into how improvers think, learn, struggle, and progress, and turn those insights into design principles that drive every product decision.
  • Build the frameworks that let us measure whether the product is actually helping people improve, not just engage: retention, skill progression, coaching effectiveness, habit formation.
  • Design the end‑to‑end flows across coaching, play, and social with a clear understanding of how they interact and reinforce each other.
  • Be a strategic voice on what we should build next, grounded in evidence about what’s actually working for learners.
  • Establish research methods, design principles, and evaluation frameworks that raise the quality of product decisions across the team.
Who We’re Looking For
Must‑Haves
  • A strong academic foundation in design, from a programme where design is approached as a research and systems discipline rather than purely a creative craft.
  • 5+ years of experience as a UX designer on consumer‑facing digital products.
  • Deep expertise in user research: interviews, usability testing, longitudinal studies, behavioural analysis. You can design studies that generate genuinely actionable insight.
  • Experience defining and tracking UX and product metrics. You know how to connect design decisions to measurable outcomes.
  • Strong systems‑level thinking. You design experiences before you design screens.
  • Ability to communicate and defend design decisions to product, engineering, and leadership.
Nice‑to‑Haves
  • Background in learning, behaviour change, habit formation, or educational product design.
  • Experience with A/B testing and quantitative UX methods alongside qualitative research.
  • Familiarity with AI‑powered product experiences and the unique UX challenges they introduce.
  • An interest in chess, sports improvement, or learning psychology.
Why Join Take Take
  • Pursue one of the most meaningful UX problems in consumer tech: how do you actually help people get better at something they love?
  • Work on a product co‑founded by Magnus Carlsen, with a real audience and serious momentum.
  • Be the person who defines what "success" looks like for a chess improver on our platform, and builds the tools to measure it.
  • Work with a modern, ambitious tech stack — including Rust, Convex, and cutting‑edge AI — and help shape how we use new technology as we scale.
  • Oslo‑based team, close to some of the best design and research schools in the Nordics.
