Job description

We're looking for a UI Designer bursting with ideas for what a chess app for improvers could look, feel, and move like — someone who sees the blank canvas and can't wait to fill it.

About Take Take Take

Co-founded by 5x World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, Take Take Take is building a new home for modern chess. An AI-powered platform for casual players, to get personalized coaching, play chess, and share their learning journey with friends.

We've already built a significant presence in the chess world, reaching 5 million people every month with our content. We just launched our new product, and are incredibly excited about the future. Take Take Take is backed by SNÖ, Coatue, Lovable, Patrick Collison and others. We’re a small team in Oslo and London, and on a journey to give 600 million Chess players a new home. We would love for you to join us!

The Role

Chess apps have looked the same for decades. We think that's a problem, and an opportunity. You'll bring a fresh, creative perspective to what a chess experience for improvers can actually look like: the visual language, the micro-interactions, the way progress is celebrated, the way coaching is surfaced. You're full of ideas, and you know how to make them tangible fast.

You will work closely with our product team, spanning designers and engineers, to craft the most lovable user interface for Chess learning the world has ever seen. This is a role for someone early in their career but with a strong visual voice and a genuine obsession with app design.

What You'll Do
  • Generate a constant stream of UI ideas, visual directions, and interaction concepts for how the app should look and feel for chess improvers
  • Create high-quality, polished UI across our mobile app and web platform, from individual components to full feature flows
  • Sketch, prototype, and explore multiple directions quickly, bringing ideas to life before committing to a direction
  • Help evolve our visual identity within the product: colour, typography, iconography, illustration, motion
  • Care about the small things: the animation that makes a coaching card feel satisfying, the way a streak is visualised, the empty state that still feels alive
  • Learn from the people around you, developing your craft and your product instincts over time
Who We're Looking For
Must-Haves
  • 2+ years of experience in UI design, with a track record of building global consumer-facing apps from 0 to 1. You know what it takes to go from a blank page to a product people actually use.
  • You've been an impactful designer in a small company before. You've owned the design end to end, from early concept through to working with engineers and getting it shipped.
  • You sweat the small stuff — the micro-interactions, the transitions, the tiny moments of delight that make a product feel alive and keep people coming back
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating creative, high-quality UI design for mobile or app experiences. We want to see ideas and execution, not just process.
  • Proficiency in Figma and a good eye for visual systems, components, and consistency
  • Creative energy — you have lots of ideas, and you're not precious about them
Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience or strong interest in motion design and micro-interactions
  • Background in gaming, sports, or other high-engagement consumer apps
  • A feel for how to make data and progress feel visually engaging (stats, streaks, improvement curves)
  • Some understanding of design systems and component libraries
Why Join Take Take Take
  • Help define what a modern chess app looks and feels like, starting from a nearly blank canvas
  • Work on a product co-founded by Magnus Carlsen, with a real audience of millions hungry for something new
  • Grow within a product team with high design standards, and develop your craft fast in a company that takes design seriously
  • Work with a modern, ambitious tech stack — including Rust, Convex, and cutting-edge AI — and help shape how we use new technology as we scale
  • Oslo-based team in a great city with a thriving creative and tech scene
