. Video: https://youtu.be/Xt-yHCN5QS0The Norwegian Research Centre for Renewal of Hydropower Technology, RenewHydro (www.ntnu.edu/renewhydro), has a vacancy for a PhD Candidate. RenewHydro is hosted by NTNU in Trondheim, Norway, and it is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian hydropower industry.
The candidate will work with new technical designs for pumped storage plants. The main focus will be on the tailrace tunnel system and outlet structure (pumping intake), but the research includes the whole, overarching plant design, including tunnels, surge tanks and sand traps. The research will focus on how pump storage plants can be operated with high performance and efficiency, while also reducing environmental impacts. Hence, the candidate will work in cross disciplines with team members who work with fish behavior, engineering geology, turbine design, variable speed operation, etc.
It involves fundamental research including a literature study and CFD modelling with the use of real case-study hydropower projects.

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,-per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
The employment period is 3 years.
For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD program in Civil ang Environmental Engineering (https://www.ntnu.edu/ibm/phd )within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral program throughout the period of employment.
