Job summary

Jotun A/S in Sandefjord, Norway, seeks an experienced patent professional with chemistry expertise to manage IP protection, draft and prosecute patent applications, and handle oppositions. You will work closely with R&D, legal, and external patent attorneys in a fast-paced environment.

The role requires strong English communication, initiative, and a systematic, analytical approach to develop IP strategies and support Freedom to Operate for cutting-edge coatings technology.

Qualifications

  • Higher education in chemistry, ideally with polymer, organic or material chemistry knowledge (Master or PhD).
  • Experience with patent work, preferably in-house patent counsel or qualified patent attorney.
  • Candidates who have started the EQE process will also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Capture, evaluate and advise on appropriate IPR protection, particularly patenting.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications and oppositions with external patent attorneys.
  • Handle prosecution and contentious proceedings with external patent attorneys.
  • Competitor monitoring and Freedom to Operate evaluations.
  • Develop and support patent strategies for positioning and FTO.
  • Be an IP advisor for R&D and Business and promote IP awareness across Jotun.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE Jotun is a global and innovative paint company with ambitions for further growth. The Group Patent department ensures and maximizes the protection of Jotun's intellectual properties and investments in R&D as well as contributing to Freedom to Operate for Jotun's business worldwide. As part of Group Patent, you will work with the newest technology within the paint industry in close contact with Jotun's global R&D organisation, legal team and external patent attorneys. You will be part of a dedicated team having a high activity level. We are looking for a candidate with a good knowledge of both chemistry and patenting. The position is located at our new global headquarter in Sandefjord.

Responsibilities
  • Capture, evaluate and advise on appropriate IPR protection, in particular patenting.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications and oppositions in cooperation with external patent attorneys.
  • Handle prosecution and contentious proceedings in cooperation with external patent attorneys.
  • Competitor monitoring.
  • Carry out Freedom to Operate Evaluations.
  • Develop and support patent strategies for positioning and Freedom to Operate.
  • Be an IP advisor for R&D and Business.
  • Promote and increase IP awareness and competence across Jotun.
