Jotun in Sandefjord, Norway, seeks a chemistry-focused patent professional to join Group Patent. You will help protect IP and enable Freedom to Operate for our global business, collaborating with R&D, legal, and external patent attorneys.

The role combines scientific expertise with strategic patent planning in a fast-paced, international environment.

Qualifications

• Higher education in chemistry (Master or PhD) with knowledge of polymer/organic/material chemistry.
• Experience with patent work; in-house patent counsel or qualified patent attorney; EQE process considered

Responsibilities

• Capture, evaluate and advise on IP protection, especially patenting.
• Draft and prosecute patent applications and oppositions with external attorneys.
• Handle prosecution and contentious proceedings with external attorneys.
• Competitor monitoring.
• Carry out Freedom to Operate Evaluations.
• Develop patent strategies for positioning and Freedom to Operate.
• Be an IP advisor for R&D and business.
• Promote IP awareness across Jotun.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

Jotun is a global and innovative paint company with ambitions for further growth. The Group Patent department ensures and maximizes the protection of Jotun's intellectual properties and investments in R&D as well as contributing to Freedom to Operate for Jotun's business worldwide. As part of Group Patent, you will work with the newest technology within the paint industry in close contact with Jotun's global R&D organisation, legal team and external patent attorneys. You will be part of a dedicated team having a high activity level. We are looking for a candidate with a good knowledge of both chemistry and patenting. The position is located at our new global headquarter in Sandefjord.

Responsibilities

• Capture, evaluate and advise on appropriate IPR protection, in particular patenting.
• Draft and prosecute patent applications and oppositions in cooperation with external patent attorneys.
• Handle prosecution and contentious proceedings in cooperation with external patent attorneys.
• Competitor monitoring.
• Carry out Freedom to Operate Evaluations.
• Develop and support patent strategies for positioning and Freedom to Operate.
• Be an IP advisor for R&D and Business.
• Promote and increase IP awareness and competence across Jotun.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR AND WHAT WE OFFER

Formal requirements

• Higher education in chemistry, ideally with knowledge of polymer, organic or material chemistry (Master or PhD level)
• Experience with patent work, preferably as in-house patent council or qualified patent attorney. Candidates who have started the EQE process will also be considered
• Strong written and spoken English communication skills
