Associate professor of medicine (molecular pathology)

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Medicine (K1) a permanent position (100%) as associate professor in molecular pathology is available at Centre for Cancer Biomarkers CCBIO.

We are looking for a colleague who, together with the staff at CCBIO, will contribute to excellent research, teaching, dissemination and innovation. CCBIO has several research groups at multiple departments, conducts research on biomarkers for cancer and provides teaching in a range of relevant subjects through its research school, the Research School for Cancer Studies. We are looking for a person who is in an active phase of his or her career, and who has demonstrated enthusiasm and academic expertise within molecular pathology.

About the work tasks/research

The person who fills this position shall both initiate and lead research projects, teach and supervise students and research fellows, as well as take on administrative tasks within a recommendatory time frame. It is expected that the person who fills this position will regularly submit applications to relevant national and international sources for research financing. The teaching responsibilities that are assigned to this position are primarily connected tomolecular pathology, but the person who fills this position is obligated to teach in areas relating to the study programmes for which the faculty/department is responsible at any given time. The person who fills this position is expected to demonstrate a high level of ambition and good quality with regards to research and teaching, and to participate actively in the strategic planning and academic activities of the department and the faculty.

Qualifications and personal qualities

Qualified applicants have a Norwegian doctoral degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or equivalent qualifications(for example MD)and satisfy the requirements concerning educational competence.Documented experimental experience must include tissue handling, basic immunohistochemistry, and advanced high-multiplex antibody-based analyses (especially imaging mass cytometry); mapping of protein interactions; RNA mapping via in-situ sequencing; spatial metabolomics; RNA sequencing; as well as bioinformatics skills (e.g., R) for digital image analysis and advanced statistical analyses of data from large patient cohorts.The ideal candidate publishes at a high international level, including several first- and last author publications without co-authorship of PhD or postdoc supervisors. The candidate has been successful in applying for grants as the main applicant from national and international sources of financing for research and educational development, and has established, or is in the process of establishing, his or her own research team with focus on spatial multi-omics to investigate cancer progression and emergence of therapy-resistance. Results attained in the course of the last 5-7 years will be given particular weight in evaluation of the application. The ideal candidate also has experience with teaching at the bachelor- and master level or in a programme of professional study, as well as experience with supervision of PhD students. Invitations to speak at international meetings or conferences, as well as service on international or national evaluation committees and commitments to institutional roles (for example, as a board member), will be considered an advantage.Experience from different national and international research institutions after PhD, and documented ability to establish international networks will count positively in the evaluation, as will experience with and interest in innovation. The applicant’s personal suitability for the position is a significant factor in the evaluation.

Educational competence is a requirement for the position, see guidelines for establishment of a pedagogical portfolio atCenter for medical education . The requirement is absolute for appointment as professor while an associate professor will be offered the necessary training if the requirement is not met before appointment.

The language of instruction is primarily Norwegian. It is required that the person appointed has proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at level B2 within three years of employment. UiB offers Norwegian language courses and will facilitate meeting the language requirement.
